• Bootable Ubuntu on a Mac?

I was wondering if it was possible to run bootable Ubuntu on a Mac? I am very unfamiliar with Macs, but they are beginning to monopolize my school so I was wondering if it was possible to put the bootable Ubuntu on a flash drive (as you would for a PC) and boot it? Is this possible? Wasn't sure if I should ask in the Mac subforum or this one, but I figured most Linux savvy people tend to know more about technology as a whole, whereas Mac people are biased assholes asking why the hell I'd want to run another OS.
yes
Well I can't seem to find much on google about it. Link me? [editline]11th November 2010[/editline] I see a lot of people asking the same question, seldom do I see an actual response with instructions.
it's the same thing unless it's a PPC mac
it's the same thing unless it's a PPC mac
Okay, so it's one of those new iMac's probably '08 (or around that time period), with the newest installation of Snow Leopard. When I have the bootable drive in, how do I prompt it to boot from the USB device?
fuck if I know, my guess would be f8, f11, delete, etc.
You can't prompt it to boot from a USB device by default. You have to partition the hard drive. @buttsex To select boot drive during startup hold down option.
what the fuck is an option key
Shit, well they computers aren't really to be tampered with and they have some bullshit program called deepfreeze on them that won't allow you to edit the files or folders, even if you do they're reset when the computer is rebooted.
what the fuck is an option key
Windows key i guess.
I think the option key is either the control or the alt key. Macs have some retarded pieces of shit instead of the standard control and alt keys.
what the fuck is an option key
A key on the Mac keyboard layout.
I've run an ubuntu live cd on my macbook pro. Slow as. Something slow. Just use the mac os.
what the fuck is an option key
alt key
I downloaded the PPC version of Ubuntu and it refuses to boot under any circumstances in my G3 Mac, but boots fine on my PS3...
There's 2 things wrong with that statement.
There's 2 things wrong with that statement.
Exactly what?
I've run an ubuntu live cd on my macbook pro. Slow as. Something slow. Just use the mac os.
You really think a live cd has the same speed as an installed one? Well no, a live cd is reading everything from the cd, the read speed of cd is increndibly slow. When you actuallly install it, it's on your hard drive, and the read speed is way faster, so your system is.
Exactly what?
1.There's no PPC version of Ubuntu, only PC. 2. You can't run Linux on PS3 anymore.
1. There's a PowerPC version of Ubuntu. Latest I could find though is 9.04: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/9.04/release/ubuntu-9.04-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso 2. If you never updated your firmware, you can install Linux on your PS3. Whops, sorry, I'll have to correct myself. There's a 10.10 version for the PS3. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.10/release/ubuntu-10.10-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso
2. If you never updated your firmware, you can install Linux on your PS3.
For now anyway, new games are gonna ship with the required firmware update now.
What if you haven't used your PS3 in ages, are still on the old firmware, and have no interest in playing on it anymore? It might be a small portion of PS3 owners, but they do exist, no reason to ignore them.
1.There's no PPC version of Ubuntu, only PC. 2. You can't run Linux on PS3 anymore.
1) There ARE PPC and PS3 distros. 2) I have not updated my PS3 since 3.15, so I still have my OtherOS, because it's a feature I paid for.
