18 million too many. I'll never understand why the Borderlands series is so successful. Maybe it's because they offer an experience that hasn't been offered anywhere else. Same reason why Bethesda games are successful despite being garbage.

The first one had an extremely disappointing ending and the second literally had characters spouting internet memes every two minutes.

Level of difficulty that appeals to everyone from casual couch coop to super hardcore theorycrafters. [editline]6th August 2014[/editline]
It's Diablo as an FPS. Games like CoD and Battlefield that don't really have writing beyond stilted mission briefings. Though Wolfenstein New Order was pretty great. Also disagree with the memes thing. There are a few in the game but not that many. It's not like there is anything wrong with reference humor as long as it's backed up with originality. I laughed more in my first BL2 playthrough than I have in most games.

I find myself enjoying listening to everyone's dialogue as well as the missions, they never seem to get old.

Nothing better than all of Handsome Jack's lines, but especially his little anecdote about the man with the spoon.
Borderlands 1 felt really weird pacing wide because you basically spent three quarters of the game's total play time in the first two areas and then all of a sudden you zoom through all of the areas because you unlock fast travel and things get really big and really empty. Borderlands 2 was fun but so fucking repetitive after a while. The humor also got old fairly quick for me.
Handsome Jack is a really well written character, but the rest of the writing in the game I don't really care for. Also Claptrap needs to go die in a fire, I can't stand the little shit.
the problem isn't memes it's just the fact that it tries hard as fuck to be funny and isn't a lot. gameplay is fun though

And that's not mentioning the heavy saturation of other references. It bugged me a lot while I was playing it, so it's the experience that I walked away with. You might like it, but I don't. I agree that there's nothing wrong with referential humor in moderation, but to say that Borderlands 2 doesn't go overboard is just wrong. The game's humor and writing relies very heavily on it. The core story was alright, but I didn't think it was anything special. The first game had better writing, in my opinion. Even if the ending was shit (again, in my opinion). I don't think Borderlands 2 is a bad game. The gameplay is nicely improved from Borderlands 1, though I felt it got very repetitive after a while. It seems the biggest running problem with the Borderlands series is pacing, like Ganerumo said. In B1 you start slow then zip through the rest of the game at breakneck speed and in B2 you start off running but then slow to a tedious crawl.
Blah blah memes blah blah not funny blah blah tiny tina blah blah claptrap blah blah. I do not care. It's a fun game, and fun to play with friends. End of story.
Using the Wiki you posted seems to show there is barely any meme references at all though, and even then they are using a rather generous definition of what counts as a meme. It doesn't even mention zer0. It's not that I like or don't like meme references, it's that in reality they are such a small part of the massive project that constitutes roughly 80% of the criticism the game gets. I really think it's just people going out of their way to look for something that isn't really there.
I agree that there's nothing wrong with referential humor in moderation, but to say that Borderlands 2 doesn't go overboard is just wrong. References are okay until they reach a limit that seems to vary person to person. Personally I don't think they went overboard at all and the references added some campy/cheesy fun to the game.
I like the aesthetics of the game, but I highly dislike the gameplay. Which is why I'm looking forward to Telltale's game.
I prefered Borderlands 1's atmosphere to Borderlands 2's. Borderlands 1's felt more subtle, but still charmingly zany, and had a bit of a homey feel. Borderlands 2 went more purposely zany, and dear God I hate what they did to Claptrap. It felt like most of his dialogue was "Hey, look how annoying I am! Guys, look! Aren't I annoying? Hey, hey, guys! Did you hear how pathetic I am?" Claptrap in Borderlands 1 felt more naturally useless and annoying, like a punching bag that has personality.

Not to mention his voice acting drove his lines home so well. Without spoiling anything, his emotional reaction to certain... events ([sp]Angel[/sp]) is fantastic. His actions in response fit the character. When you do the side-quests about his character, you find out Jack's origins how he became one sick fucker. The story was simplistic, but the characters within it were identifiable and entertaining. Tiny Tina is equally loved and hated for being the spastic, comic-relief character, but dig a little deeper and you find out she is seriously fucked up because of what happened to her parents. Brick seems to have the emotional depth of, well, a brick, but then you find out what they did to his dog. Roland is a rather flatly written soldier type character, but I didn't dislike him. The only character I actually disliked was Lilith. Came across as too much over a power-tripping emo-brat. The characters and their interactions are what made the story for me in the base game. But they really shine in the expansions. And the memes-every-5-minutes bandwagon is bull. There's a little sprinkled here and there, but most of the references are not meme's but simply cultural references and in-universe jokes.
