• AMD or Intel?

Keeping in mind Sandy Bridge is coming, what would be the best upgrade path right now - i7 930 or Phenom II x6 1090T? My current Intel based system (C2D E6850) is a complete disaster - lag in everything, including the key repeat rate in a bare linux terminal, so I'm not too enthused about sticking with Intel. Plus their upgrade path is less than impressive compared to AMD. So if I were to get the above AMD processor and a decent AM3 board, would I get another CPU upgrade out of it before having to replace the board? I don't really care if the benchmark performance is slightly lower with the AMD - being able to upgrade individual components in the future is much more important to me.
930, but I'm an Intel fanboy... AMD is more bang for the buck, so actually the Phenom. You wouldn't have to upgrade much.
Clearly AMD if you have some concerns about your budget. But I would go for, if I were you, 890GX chipset (like ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3) because it's the same thing for lower prices.
Whats your overall budget?
Don't really have an overall fixed budget, but I'm aiming to spend around £250 on the CPU, so either the i930 or x6 1090T fit that perfectly.
So your budget it around $10,000 then. Lets see...
sandy bridge is like 2011
sandy bridge is like 2011
Exactly - 1 year and all existing i7 hardware will be a dead-end when it comes to upgrading.
Exactly - 1 year and all existing i7 hardware will be a dead-end when it comes to upgrading.
AMD are also releasing their new 'bulldozer' architecture in the next year or so both AMD and intel are equal on that score
AMD if you dont wanna Overclock. Intel if you wanna overclock
AMD are also releasing their new 'bulldozer' architecture in the next year or so both AMD and intel are equal on that score
True, but from what I've read, AM4 (AM3+ ?) CPUs will work in certain AM3 motherboards whereas Intel will need a totally new motherboard. Also in terms of motherboard I am currently looking at this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-281-GI Mainly because I dislike Asus and it has an IDE port for my DVD burner.
True, but from what I've read, AM4 CPUs will work in certain AM3 motherboards whereas Intel will need a totally new motherboard.
It's a completely new architecture, I doubt it'd work in an AM3 socket. Also just because intel have released a new processor with a new socket doesn't mean your i7 is redundant, it'll still easily be playing the latest games in 3/4 years. I you're worried about having to replace your motherboard in the future don't waste your money on a crosshair motherboard, you could get two perfectly good motherboards for that sort of money.
http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=259&threadid=132294 This thread seems to disagree. Also I have had terrible experience with cheap motherboards (Asus P5N-E SLI in particular), so I don't really want to make the same mistake again in going for a cheap board :P
I also had a bad experience with cheap motherboards (MSI 775 socket for my Intel Dual Core) but the 890GX chipset is just clearly fine (not as "cheap" as the other 800 motherboard series though) [editline]08:40PM[/editline] Also, it had a good graphic chipset (HD 4290) if shit goes down with your graphic card.

Also it seems you've just gone onto newegg and picked the most expensive motherboard, why not get this for example? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131398&cm_re=ASUS_M4A785TD-V_EVO-_-13-131-398-_-Product It's a good motherboard and should meet all your requirements, but is less than half the price of the corsshair
I only mentioned the Crosshair IV before because it was the first board I looked at. asus MoBos are excellent

If anything, ASUS is the best motherboard manufacturer out there.
And besides the crosshair motherboard you want is made by asus
I would still go with the core2duo's, the new 34nm are cheaper than dirt, and function just as well as an i5.
I would still go with the core2duo's, the new 34nm are cheaper than dirt, and function just as well as an i5.
afaik there are no 34nm processors in the Core 2 series.
