http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/IndependentGaming/~3/nyMycQ-Me4A/gdc_europe_gamers_have_a_respo.html
No because a vast majority of indie games are horrendous, and encouraging that would be just as bad as encouraging generic brown and bloom FPS's. To clarify, I'm not saying all indie games are shit and we should never play them ever again, there are a few diamonds in the rough. Minecraft, Terraria, The ArmA series, Men of War, Mount and Blade, all excellent games that deserve every ounce of success that they've earned. A lot of indie sites and supporters seem to be under the impression that a game is instantly the greatest thing since sliced bread based purely on the fact that it's an indie game, not on its own merits.
Wow, that's an incredibly presumptious jerkbag right there.
I tend to agree. Sure, some indie games are crap, but we've seen alot of good things coming out of it (Minecraft, Super Meat Boy, Trine, just to name a few). Indie games are the place where inovation can happen, which will be adapted by the big guys.
I'll support indies when they stop making shit games that are ~totally artistic~
Ugh. I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about indie developers and games, seriously just fuck off already, indie developers making a few amazing titles (Minecraft being the best example) doesn't mean that indie developers are automatically talented and innovative. 95% of indie games are garbage. Out of the hundreds (if not thousands) of indie games made, only a few are worth paying for, and out of the ones worth paying for only a handful could be considered amazing or innovative.
You've lost me at "minecraft being the best example" If that's what you percieve indie gaming as being, you're terribly wrong. Go play braid. Or the path, a game in which you walk forward and in most cases die? That's GOTY gameplay right there. You just can't understand it.
im sorry but amnesia is a far better indie game than minecraft or braid.
All of the shit above is opinionated.
"We should appreciate what a game is trying to do, whether we like it or not,"
so? people buy things they like, just because it's an indie developer doesn't make it any different. He does music comparison but we can do the same. I know I wouldn't buy music I don't like, just like I won't buy a game I don't like. If this guy had his own way every indie dev would be rolling in money?
No because a vast majority of indie games are horrendous, and encouraging that would be just as bad as encouraging generic brown and bloom FPS's.
ArmA's Indie, i didn't know that.
\ Technically they are, they self publish and its not really a AAA game. Its borderline AAA.
Correction, gamers have a responsibility to support GOOD games. If activision came out with a wonderful game tommorow without tons of DRM and first-day DLC, I would reward their efforts with my support.
"we don't buy a music album and say 'this album was only 30 minutes long'"
This is a shit comparison. For starters, a lot of people do complain about a lack of material on albums. Secondly, albums are far easier to relisten to than a lot of games are to replay. In a lot of games, such as puzzle games, a lot of the fun is figuring out how to beat a level, and once you've beat it, there's no real reason to go back to it, unless it's a score based game. That element isn't there in music, it's a completely different form of media. We shouldn't feel forced to like things we don't like.
My favorite indie game was the Precursors
Notch made the game entirely by himself, now he's got his own little company owned by no one but him, the game's popularity came completely from people playing the game and spreading word about it. That's the entire definition of an indie game, something made by some guy or multiple people entirely by themselves, without any help from companies like EA or Valve. Indie game =/= Edgy "art" video game Braid, Minecraft, Amnesia, they're all indie games.
While correct that's not the point I was making. I wasn't saying minecraft isn't indie, I'm saying that minecraft isn't the best indie game. It's fun? Sure. Also yeah, it's innovative enough to be classed as indie, but I'll be damned if I'll agree with it outindieing Braid, Limbo or Amnesia. Compared to those, who actually try something new and innovative, something you don't find in AAA games, minecraft is but a shadow of the indie glory those games are. In braid you stop time. In minecraft you play with LEGO.

bitch please, Trine dominates all indie games
In braid you stop time. In minecraft you play with LEGO.
lol Stopping time isn't even that original. I can understand where you're coming from but that's a pretty weak argument.
Lol, indie games. Like I'll ever pay for something that is pretty much a flash game.
Lol, indie games. Like I'll ever pay for something that is pretty much a flash game.
can't tell if serious or just really stupid Minecraft, EYE: Divine Cybermancy, Amnesia...
