Australian government to go ahead with mandatory ISP filtering
The Federal Government plans to implement mandatory ISP filtering for "refused classification" websites, it was announced today.
The government also released the report on the ISP filtering pilot, which was provided to the government by Enex Testlab in October, detailing the results of the blocking accuracy and performance of the filters.
Senator Conroy announced the new initiatives in a curiously scheduled press conference, with journalists only being notified 90 minutes prior to the start of proceedings.
"The Government will introduce legislative amendments to the Broadcasting Services Act to require all ISPs to block RC-rated material hosted on overseas servers", said the announcement.
"RC-rated material includes child sex abuse content, bestiality, sexual violence including rape, and the detailed instruction of crime or drug use.
"The report into the pilot trial of ISP-level filtering demonstrates that blocking RC-rated material can be done with 100% accuracy and negligible impact on internet speed", said Conroy.
Conroy acknowledged that the filter would only block "inadvertent" exposure to R/C content, and the pilot report bluntly states that any technically competent user could circumvent the filtering.
The report also found that the filters on average "over-blocked" 3.4% of sites that were not intended to be filtered, and that high volume sites would likely cause the filters to fail.
Initial reactions to the pilot report have been mixed, with participating ISPs praising the results (in prepared press releases), while others such as Electronic Frontiers Australia stating that it "brings more questions than answers".
The DBCDE website is unavailable due to demand for the report, which we have mirrored here.

All hope is lost for us :ohdear:
I don't understand why people don't boycott this.
It's the massive Iceberg heading towards you, I think it's messing with your politicians.

I thought Facism died out back in 1945?
Damn... All ye Australian FP members will be missed.
ARGH!
That's it! The children here are fucking stupid, the weather is inadequate, the beer is WARM.
Fuck it, I'm leaving.
Any other Australians wanna put some cash forward to start our own ISP?
We can register as a business, then put an application into Telstra to rent some lines at the exchange, then charge a lower-than-average price for line rental (to our customers) and provide unfiltered services for a slight annual fee.
Once we start to get a decent customer base (which we will attract with our cheap, uncensored services), we can begin to move the operation into more remote areas as part of the "National Broadband Network" that is currently being designed by the government.
If all goes to plan, then we will have a thriving, multi-million dollar business by mid-2011.
Wow, I really hate our government.
Edit: Wasn't there a list of the sites to be blocked?

I don't think it'll all be THAT simple.
That's another thing, most of us are poor as fuck here. So no money to put forward.
We live in slums, and our government uses them as a bombing range. And we have a clone of Area 51 called Area 15. And there's a place called District 8 which they never let us into. And we have no computers to type on, I'm posting with my mind.
And we're dying from giant alien space slugs.
Don't come here.
times like this make me glad to be a American.
Aussies and maybe soon uk's internet is going fucking censorship crazy.

To have to a successful boycott, you need it to be in real life.
Online petitions don't work.
I hate to use the tea parties as an example, but basically, you need to gather up like what they did and show the government who's boss. Or in the tea parties case, walk around spewing retarded propaganda.
Hopefully they implement the filter after 2012, that's when the new people come in power and will use the "Vote for me for no internet filter" line.
See, like I said in the R rated thread, they're gonna start with video games and move onto other things.
Sucks to be you.

i remember the Australia government tried to employ a filter for over protective parents to stop their children from stumbling on inappropriate websites, but a week later they said some kid bypassed the filter in 20 minutes or something (forgot specific time, but it wasn't very long)

Tea parties are my code word for having mates around and eating sugar cubes laced with LSD.
Glad to live in New Zealand. Seems that that particular Anon raid did nothing.

The filtering is at the ISP level, so proxies may not work. (still not 100% sure about that though, so don't hold my word as gospel)
There's one on Wikileaks, but it's horribly outdated.
I wouldn't click any of the links in it though. Lots of illegal shit.
A lot of legal stuff too. Like those porn tubes. They're trying to block your porn access, I guess.
Wow, just glancing at the names disturbs me.

damn sucks to be an Austrailian furry...
incoming shitstorm, prepare the box fort, deploy the troops, and get the women and children out before it's too late.

That was the Liberals (current government is Labor as you should know), and the filters were client-side and not mandatory.
It'd be hard to bypass an ISP filter, that'd be like trying to get cable without paying for cable.
It'd be hard to bypass an ISP filter, that'd be like trying to get cable without paying for cable.
Cable... Hmm.. That's an idea! Let's run a cable across the ocean from the main internet hub thingy to america's main internet hub thingy! Free internet AND no censorship!
Quick, give me 250 rainbows for the cable!
I could set up a protest over this in the middle of the city and have a megaphone and all that about it.
But i would only have 10 people there and i don't know how to organise it that well.
We do have the right to protest.
That's it, I'm moving back to America.
That's it, I'm moving back to America.
Come to Canada.
It's exactly like America except no one has guns, and everyone is SLIGHTLY skinnier...
And there's a lot of hot Italian women here.
Australia: backwards where it matters most.
