See, that is how you do "favorite lists". Aesthetics are very important.
They forgot SOMA.
No mention of LISA? Come on now.
Silent Hill 2 is on PC?
I was kinda expecting this would be a list of abysmally bad games.
They forgot SOMA.
The ending still makes me scream internally every time I think about it.
IMO HL2 is the weakest entry into this list. There are way better choices for grim games, like the two already mentioned in this thread.
LISA should be on the top.

The universe is super dark, it's just the fact that Freeman is that world's Jesus and you're playing as him that keeps it so upbeat. [editline]a[/editline] Is it bad that I prefer all of the games on the miserable list over the ones from the positive list
They forgot SOMA.
SOMA's absolutely fucking ruined by the enemies and the level design. Enemies that teleport behind you no matter how sneaky you are in samey mazes designed to get yourself trapped and killed several times before you succeed by trial and error. It fucks up any form of suspense or story the game has because you spend more time frustrated at the actual gameplay than you spend time enjoying the story. It's a problem Silent Hill 2 adverts by having better level design and purposefully limited moments where you have to fight something, and the sense of dreadful inferiority experienced during these select scenes is here on purpose and directly tied to the story, whereas the enemies in SOMA are here to fuck your day up and your inferiority to them is there to create a very artificial and tacky sense of stress that's replaced with frustration pretty damn fast.

Penumbra Overture is my favorite Frictional game because there's actual weapons and shit in it.

Everything in it just spirals and tumbles violently downhill. Also, the brain fucking is immense.
LISA should be on the list. I've never played a game which made me honestly laugh but only to then absolutely sucker punch me with something soul crushingly sad. Life-ruining experience / 10 [editline]6th July 2016[/editline]
I think SOMA should be on the list because of the universe and lore itself. Everything in it just spirals and tumbles violently downhill. Also, the brain fucking is immense.
SOMA's setting and lore was pure sci-fi done right. As for the gameplay those moments where I wasn't being chased by frustrating monsters, those moments were fantastic.
SOMA completely depends on your point of view. While at first it seems completely devoid of hope, depending on your choices, you can think of it of being a little hopeful if you interpret it differently.[sp]If you choose to not kill your copy, you won't be alone. WAU seeks to preserve life even though it has a different interpretation of what life is. Life could potentially turn into something new if you don't destroy the WAU. It's not completely certain that all life has been wiped out by the meteor, They only saw fire all along the coast where they surfaced at Lisbon. They mentioned that the ash cloud is so thick that it blocks radio waves so there could still be cut off pockets of civilization somewhere.[/sp] It's only as hopeless as you want to believe it is. There are still things left up in the air
Silent Hill 2 is on PC?
They pretty much all are. The only ones that aren't on PC are 1 and Downpour. And PT if you count that.
They pretty much all are. The only ones that aren't on PC are 1 and Downpour. And PT if you count that.
youre forgetting shattered memories which imo is one of the better ones
But how deep will I gaze with these games?
I'm almost tired of seeing stuff like Max Payne and Manhunt and System Shock and (insert old game here) in lists I know I'll never be able to get into older titles but shit like SysS2 and thief, and silent hill are considered CLASSICS among classics. It's almost a part of gaming history.
youre forgetting shattered memories which imo is one of the better ones
I tried emulating it on PPSSPP once, worked fairly well except the flashlight was overlaying some weird shadow and once the first electronic acted up I just noped out and didnt touch it, cause fuck running from those bastards that want to give you unwated hugs with a flashlight that's mostly not lighting up where its pointed.
