Need suggestions for a personal dedicated server box

Me and 2 friends play games like gmod and minecraft Technic pack often and my pc copes fine when hosting a listen server but having my own single dedicated will allow my friends to play when I'm not around or when i want to do my own thing without slowing down the server.
I just need some tips on what I should be looking for.
I need to buy or build a server that will host only 1 server at any given time for games like minecraft tekkit pack, gmod or tf2 with no more than 3 people in at most. I dont know even whwre to start. If i where to build one, what parts am I looking for. I can guess that game server boxes don't need a super powerful graphics card. Any ideas? Idealy it will.be controlable from my own pc somehow.
budget? although a hosted server might be a wiser choice
My budget is literally whatever it will cost me to get something that will run modern game servers.
Well, if there is no budget, you can order the absolute overkill machine.
Say something like 500$ ors what? Around what it should be.
I'm in £ here.
I would say no more than £350 (About $500) IF that will cope alright.
500 will get you like 5 years on a hosted solution for 4 people

Then i want to change game. Having my own for every game will be easier to handle. To be honest im plannint on building a really cheap pc that can host things for me.
Before you even start considering building a server, you need to check your internet connection if you plan on running from your house. Minecraft uses exorbitant amounts of bandwidth per player due to the constant loading and unloading of chunks.
If your home connection has less than a 512 kbit upload, you can basically forget about hosting from home.
