As the name says, could I use an ethernet switch as a normal desktop hub? Would it require any configuration or modding?

There. I know very little about this stuff, so I'm asking for your help.
Not sure... I think you can. I've never used one of these though.
I did a little research and I think this is a smart switch which would work out that it's working with a LAN enviroment.
However, I'm not sure as I'm no networking prefessional, I'd get another opinion.
Yes, you can.
And I nearly bought that switch the other day for resale.
Sure can. That's a pretty nice switch too, at a very nice price, I'd snap it up.
Thanks then. I'm sure getting this beast.
This is actually better to use, since a normal hub sends every package to all connected computers, while a switch only sends it to the computer which requested them.

unless you have custom HTPC's or set-top boxes in every room in your house, a desktop for each family member, some NAS in the back of a closet, and a bunch of unnecessary stuff, just get a cheap 8-port switcher or if you have a laptop, get a wireless router...

But yeah, it will work.
Overkill, but still will work...
Guys, i think hees hosting a 30 man LAN.
There was a post about in a few days back.
Is it a managed switch? (If not, you may need a router hooked up to it)

Just give each computer a static ip and itl be fine.
But yeah, it is managed.
I guess right
My school has a load of these, i got one for free along with a HP desktop.

Switches don't do anything with IP addresses so that wouldn't do anything. They forward data based on mac addresses.
I don't think this is a layer 3 switch, but I could be wrong.
