BATH, Maine — A Navy shipbuilder said it had to fumigate a warehouse and part of a warship because a shipment of parts from the West Coast contained about two-dozen venomous black widow spiders.Bath Iron Works employees discovered the arachnids in a crate containing vertical launch system components. Spokesman Jim DeMartini said Tuesday the discovery led to the fumigation of several compartments in the under-construction destroyer Michael Murphy. A warehouse in Brunswick also was fumigated. The spiders were discovered earlier this month, DeMartini says, and he said the shipyard is confident exterminators eliminated any spiders that weren’t stomped.Black widows aren’t found in Maine but are found in California, where the shipment originated. The females are known for their distinctive hourglass marking and their potentially lethal bite.[/release]

they were obviously so drugged out they were like "duuuuuude let's put spiders in the navy's missile part shipments"
Oh god, if I was one of the dockworkers to discover the spiders, I'd have a heart attack. Black Widows are one of my biggest fears.

I was doing yardwork for a neighbor once
She wanted me to go down in a window well and dig dirt out so it won't flood if it rains
So naturally spiders exist at the top of the window, I spray the fuckers, give it a few minutes, jump down there
the minute I set foot in there, I shit you not, a black widow skidders across the pane of the window
I jumped the entire height of the windowwell to get out of there and sprayed the fucker until he was drowning in poison
NOPE!
I get uncomfortable just around ordinary house spiders. If I ever saw a black widow in real life, let alone twelve of them, I'd probably piss myself and run as fast as I could in the other direction.
Restart the Orion Warship project and aim the nuclear flamethrower at that shipyard.
Oh come on!
There are probably six black widows hanging around in my garage and side-yard right now. They're really pretty lethargic and easy to avoid, non the least because their webs are easy to spot, being chaotic and especially tough, even for spider webs. All you have to do is not be a moron and stick your hands into dark nooks and crevices, and even if they bite you, you're not likely to die.
I understand preserving the nearby insect ecosystem by keeping them out, but a bit of an overreaction...
Pennywise has summoned thou to Maine!

Nuclear... Flamethrower?
You might be onto something there.
2 dozen doesn't seem like much of an invasion to me...
That's where they make Arleigh Burke Class destroyers.
I bet this was one of the work of Pakistan/Iranian/Russian/North Korean Agents
In south africa we had a box thing containing the pool pump, and inside it was INFESTED with black widows. There was one fat one and a billion million million babies, I shat bricks when i opened it.
I actually had a blackwidow in my house a few nights back. They are honestly the most don't give a fuck spider I've ever seen. They'll run at you and try to bite you if you get within a few feet of them.
NOPE NOPE NOPE haha right guys??? NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE

I'm sorry.
If I opened the crate and saw over 2 black widow spiders, I would run for the hills. Quite literally.

That is all.
The moment the spiders were discovered:

That would imply that the first part wasn't a joke.
Unless you were in the middle of no where and had no access to basic medical stuff, you would be fine from a black widow bite.
I'm not scared of Red backs, Black widows, same spider, different markings. red backs are a little more aggressive. Fuckers are everywhere. It's these mnotherfuckers i'm scared of.
