Mr Cammack and his friend set out last Tuesday in an attempt to climb the Frendo Spur on the Aiguille du Midi, a 12,600ft (3,842m) mountain in the Mont Blanc massif. After only one day they tried to call out a helicopter to help them - but as the weather was so bad, the rescue team could not take off and the climbers were forced to battle for survival. The weather was a little better on Thursday and a helicopter was able to search for the duo. But by then it was too late for Mr Cammack, who had fallen to his death.
Robbie loved life and brought a laugh and inspiration to so many people - he will be deeply missed. He was well known throughout Moray for his achievements, both academic and sporting. Robbie Cammack's father, Adrian
His unnamed climbing partner was rescued, but the body of the Scot, from Craiellachie near Moray, was recovered on Friday, the Press and Journal newspaper reported. Mr Cammack's family and friends paid tribute to their son, who was also a keen runner and a member of the Moray Roadrunners club. A statement on the Moray Roadrunners website said: "It is with great sadness that I have to announce (at the request of his family) that Robbie Cammack died this weekend due to an unfortunate accident whilst climbing in the French Alps. "19-year-old Robbie will be remembered by many in the club and our heartfelt condolences go to his parents and family." Father Adrian said: "Robbie loved life and brought a laugh and inspiration to so many people - he will be deeply missed. "He was well known throughout Moray for his achievements, both academic and sporting." A Foreign Office spokesman added: "We can confirm the death of a British national in the French Alps. Next of kin are aware and are receiving consular assistance." Atleast it might have been quick, right? :smith:
Fuck, falling to your death would be terrifying. Knowing that the end was coming and there's literally nothing you can do about it. I mean, I want to know when I'm about to die, I want to know it's about to come, but I want to have the knowledge that there may be something I can do to survive. Fuck you gravity. Fuck you.
I was going to make a flying Scotsman joke but it would just be heartless
Falling 1,300ft, knowing you are gonna die and there ain't shit you can do about it, besides from accepting your fate. This teen now knows all about that, and he's gone! :saddowns:
That's like 20 or 30 seconds of free fall. Must be the scariest thing ever. Poor guy.
Cant imagine what would be going through your head in half a minute. Knowing the inevidible, that your going to die and there is nothing you can do about it.
He should've remembered the first rule about flying: Throw yourself at the ground, and miss. That last part is particularly important
This reminded me of the Dyaltolv incident in the 50's, except this incident has less mystery to it.
That's like 20 or 30 seconds of free fall. Must be the scariest thing ever. Poor guy.
Realistically he probably free fell for a little while, and then hit the mountain and bounced a few times. Probably about 10 seconds of free fall and then quite a while of slamming into the mountain and falling further... :smith: Hopefully he died immediately upon first impact.
Don't you pass out after a while of freefall?
Don't you pass out after a while of freefall?
No, how do you think sky divers open their parachutes?

My girlfriend goes to college with two guys who were friends with this guy
She's still your girlfriend if she's with two other guys? [editline]15th June 2011[/editline] nice
The alps are a very dangerous place. I learned how to snowboard in the old Olympic lodge and slopes in Innsbruck on a church trip. The bunny slope was a bit crazy and steep. I have yet to really GET it down.

I can't imagine his body looking too nice after a distance like that.

Not to sound cruel, but the best thing that could have happened was to land head first. He would go out without pain. If he were to land on his feet, he would feel the rupture of organs and splitting of bones until he bled out internally.
Atleast it might have been quick, right? :smith:
Only if he landed on his head. Seriously, ideas like this give me nightmares. Falling a hundred and thirty stories, knowing there's nothing you can do to stop it, then landing as every bone in your body breaks like glass, and then you slowly bleed to death in the freezing cold.
They say you black out before you hit the hit ground. I guess that's one comfort he had. Poor guy... :ohdear:
They say you black out before you hit the hit ground. I guess that's one comfort he had. Poor guy... :ohdear:
What? How do you black out? When? You don't black out when you're falling otherwise sky diving would be illegal.
I guess that's an urban legend then. Let me rephrase, REALLY poor guy. :(
