PARIS — Somali pirates in two skiffs fired on a French navy vessel early Wednesday after apparently mistaking it for a commercial boat, the French military said. The French ship gave chase and captured five suspected pirates. No one was wounded by the volleys from the Kalashnikov rifles directed at La Somme, a 3,800-ton refueling ship, said Rear Admiral Christophe Prazuck, a military spokesman. La Somme "was probably taken for a commercial ship by the two small skiffs" some 250 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia, said Prazuck. "They understood their mistake too late," Prazuck said. One skiff fled, and La Somme pursued the second one in an hour-long chase. "There were five suspected pirates on board. No arms, no water, no food," Prazuck said. France is a key member of the European Union's naval mission, Operation Atalanta, fighting Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden. It has aggressively tracked and caught suspected pirates and handed over at least 22 to Kenya. An additional 15 suspects were brought to France for prosecution after allegedly seizing French nationals' boats. President Nicolas Sarkozy called for tougher action against piracy last year after dozens of attacks.
Looks like they needed some lightsabers...
Dead.
We should form a flotilla of cruise ships and leisure boats packed fill with soldiers and set sail for Somali waters.
Isn't this the second time this has happened? Maybe pirates should stop attacking the big matte gray tankers. We should just start painting our naval refuelers in civilian colours and using them as bait.

I'm surprised the French didn't run away
Only the French navy would be mistaken for something else.
I'd attack that too...
I'm surprised that the french didn't surrender...
This is the ship: Oh come on pirates, it looked so obvious.
This is the ship: Oh come on pirates, it looked so obvious.
At a glance, and I would assume at a distance as well, to my eyes it looks like a cargo ship.

Yar har diggity dee i would love to see the lazy town pirates in somalia
The lack of naval guns could be very deceiving.
Well it was only the French. It's a good thing for them that they didn't attack the American or the British navy.
How do you accidentally attack a Frenc - Oh.
Once again, Somali pirates are idiots.
:irony:
"Let's see, cannons, French navy flag, massive ship, heavily armoured: yeah, that's definately a trade vessel."
"Let's see, cannons, French navy flag, massive gunship grey coloured ship, heavily armoured: yeah, that's definately a trade vessel."
Fixed.
"Let's see, cannons, French navy flag, massive ship, heavily armoured: yeah, that's definately a trade vessel."
She didn't have visible cannons, nor was she flying a flag that could be seen from where the pirates were, and you can't just see naval armor plating. :downs:
It's kind of obvious when you look at that ship that it's meant to withstand attacks, not to trade.
The article does say "early Wednesday" so I'm going to presume that it occured ~5:00 AM. Were this the case, everything on the ocean would look either pink or black/grey to the pirates depending on where they were in relation to the sun.
French military victory? Sort of.
We'll surely prevent scurvy if we all eat an orange
Guybrush Threepwood: Do you know anything about lifting curses? Murray: Oh, right. I know a lot about lifting curses. That's why I'm a disembodied talking skull sitting on top of a spike in the middle of a swamp.
