The body of a man found in a Rhode Island river may be a student mistakenly identified as one of the Boston bombers, authorities say.
The state medical examiner's office is trying to determine whether the dead man is Sunil Tripathi, 22, who has been missing since March.

Tripathi's family set up a Facebook page to try to find him, featuring videos and photos of their search. Dozens of people contributed messages after Tripathi was wrongly linked to events in Boston.
"A tremendous and painful amount of attention has been cast on our beloved Sunil Tripathi," his family said in a statement after Tripathi's name began trending in relation to Boston. A Reddit moderator later apologised.

Tripathi became the focus of speculation after the crowdsourcing users of Reddit identified him as the "white hat" suspect. There were reports last night on Twitter that Tripathi's name was being used by police on police scanners. NDTV.com reports that Tripathi's family -- which has mounted a fervent campaign on social media to find their son -- spent "a few hours" last night living through a "nightmare unimaginable:"
Missing since March? How peculiar, unless Reddit picked up on that beforehand
Reddit accused someone who was missing at the time?
odd
And this is why you dont speculate.
And this is why you dont speculate.
...and that's why you read the article before posting.
And this is why you dont speculate.
This statement scares me on so many levels. Please either elaborate what you mean or use a different word, because it sounds like you're saying "and this is why using your brain is bad."

Prolly because being missing gives you plenty of time to build bombs.
Anyway, I won't lie, I read his name in a couple non-reddit sources and genuinely thought he was an actual suspect, myself. Just goes to show why you shouldn't speculate, I suppose.
I think the fact that he was missing contributed rather than detracted from the accusation.
Think about it, some guy goes "missing" without telling anyone followed by a place being bombed by someone that may or may not look like said missing person. I don't think anyone was expecting it to just be a coincidence.
And this is why you dont speculate.
speculate all you fucking want, just don't act on it until you have proof.
besides, this is about a guy who disappeared a month before bombings, so reddit's not to blame
the police literally said his name on the police scanner right after the shootout, that didn't help much either.

I guess that does make sense, I'd never heard of this guy before though, didn't closely follow the Boston Bombings

No. during the "white hat" shit, Reddit was nothing but a "this guy looks suspicious" manhunt. I believe Smurfy had a photo that describes it well. (it had everyones face with a red circle)
You can hold your opinions, but dont go "This is the bomber" just by judging photos.

you do know that accusing someone of killing three people can seriously fuck their life up right

...but he's been missing since march
are you implying he was murdered or what
Yeah, this looks like a suicide, accident or unrelated murder. I don't think some random redditor or other person who heard his name in relation to Boston would be able to find him and kill him as vigilante-justice.
...but he's been missing since march

Surely he can't have been that missing if they found pictures of him at the marathon?
And this is why you dont speculate.
Speculate =/= accusing a single person.
...but he's been missing since march

nickohlus seemed to be implying that it's necessary to condemn people if it means searching for the truth, since he said that Reddit's "investigations" are just "using your brain"
Maybe the guy at the marathon just looked like him and he's actually been dead the whole time he's been missing.
you do know that accusing someone of killing three people can seriously fuck their life up right
same with accusing someone as being a pedo or anything else bad in the eyes of the public, even if they are "innocent" others will think otherwise and pull some shit.
Maybe the guy at the marathon just looked like him and he's actually been dead the whole time he's been missing.
Seems the most likely to me, too; though there seems to be no info on age of the body.

i'm just wondering why areolop said "this is why you dont [sic] speculate"
because it sounds like he's automatically assuming someone killed this guy because of the false connections to boston

they didn't find pictures of him at the marathon, they found pictures of dzhokar tsarnaev that people thought were pictures of him
at least, as far as i know
Seems the most likely to me, too; though there seems to be no info on age of the body.
Yeah, otherwise he'd have gone missing for a month, showed up at the marathon, survived the bombs and then died from something else and ended up in a river 70 miles away.
I'm sure most people that knew about this bloke jumped the gun and thought it could be him.
This whole don't suspect anyone movement is being way to cautious.
If this is him, and it was a suicide..
man
what a shit way to go :(
And this is why you dont speculate.
on the other hand, thanks to reddit we have proof ghosts are real and that they hate living people with a vengance
Hope he went out with a bang.
edit: you're all hypocrites.
Hope he went out with a bang.

Why? He had nothing to do with the bombing.

Worst-case scenario in my book is that he was murdered recently by someone doing some 'internet justice' due to him being 'identified' as the bomber by reddit. Incredibly unlikely, and I don't believe it myself, but yeah.
Here's to hoping it's not Sunil Tripathi at all, since fuck, his family's been through enough shit due to internet detectives, a dead son, no matter the cause, is the last they need.

I'm sorry, but it's a joke. chill. Besides, don't you want your death to be amazing? you don't have to link that he blew up with him going out with a bang.
i know the circumstances are unfortunate, but i don't think they would have found him alive even if he was not accused to be the bomber. while certainly tainting his name, i can't see his death being caused by that.
