I am going to be getting new anti virus software and I need advice on what is best. I am using AVG free at the moment but I need something more secure!!! I don't mind paying! What do you use, or could recommend? Thanks.

I'd say MSE, or Windows Defender, how it is called in Windows 8.
I'm using a combination of malwarebytes and symantec endpoint protection, although I'm not sure if I'm 100% secure with it..
If you care about performance and are willing to pay (not aware of any free ones that do this), any realtime antivirus that has an option to scan on execution and writes only, not for all disk activity. Besides that, the differences are minor and you should refer to av-comparatives or equivalent
Frankly I just use AVG Free as day to day protection. I used to be all concerned and go for the highest rated one, but now that's just a hassle I can't be bothered with (or afford!). Really if I run into a problem that AVG can't get at I'll just run up Malwarebytes or something similar. I I stay away from Norton though because it's always just felt really bloated, intrusive and difficult to uninstall.
When I had AVG, I noticed a giant speed loss in booting up my PC, but after it is up and running it was fine. However, since 2011 I started using Avast free, it's basic and there's a free version. I would recommend it, but it's up to you, there's a few good Anti-Virus's out there.

Massive fan of Kaspersky. Not saying its the best but with my years of using it, its served me well. Its light quick and easy to use. My opinion of corse.
