[release] The Oakland protest is underway in California and it's already causing problems. Rumors ripped over Twitter that the strike had shut down the Port of Oakland, the nation's fifth largest port that handled more than 2.3 million containers last year, but those reports appear to be over-blown. The Silicon Valley Mercury News is live blogging the strike and reports port operations have been considerably slowed, but the port was not shut down as of 9:40 a.m. local time. It's also reported that a line of trucks one-mile long is waiting in both directions from the SSA port terminals. The general strike is expected to shut down businesses and schools with workers showing support for the Occupy movement by marching on the city's plaza in front of city hall. Calling it a "warning shot to the 1%," Oakland protest organizer Tim Simons told CNN that the protesters will "take this into the streets and into the workplaces." The strike was called for after last week's crackdown on protesters at the Occupy Oakland rally. Check out the Occupy Oakland live video stream here. We will update the Oakland activities throughout the day. 10:15 a.m: Protesters are on their way to shut down the Wells Fargo bank at 20th and Webster. 10:59 a.m: Looks like Michael Moore (@MMFlint) is at the protest. He just tweeted out this picture of a local business with a sign in the window supporting the protesters. 11:38 a.m: The word on the street is that there are about 5,000 people marching and that the Wells Fargo is now closed. 12:11 p.m: According to tweets we're seeing, a lot of Oakland businesses, instead of shutting down, have gone cash only to support the protest. Here's a short list of who's doing that (via SFist). [/release]http://www.businessinsider.com/oakland-strike-is-getting-huge-and-has-already-slowed-down-the-nations-fifth-biggest-port-2011-11 Go go Oakland!
Watch another guy get nailed by a grenade/gas canister. Or even beaten to death by the cops.
I have a feeling that because it slowed down the port shit's about to get serious
Row row, Fight the power.
Yeah it's fantastic that the protests are getting bigger, let's all hold hands, etc., etc... But closing down schools, businesses, and essentially bringing commerce to a halt is not something you should be showcasing

Like it or not, if you want things done then don't expect it to be all peachy at first.
I love this image. I'm imagining something like this going down: "Puh. They're just jealous of us rich folk, aren't they, Piers?" "Indeed. Anyways, it's about time to pick up our new tuxedos. Better get going." "Sure thing, chap." Store: *no tuxes 4 u* "NOOOOOOOOO" "Sacre bleu! NOOOOOOOOOON"

Cash only is a pretty nifty way to show distrust to banks. Good idea!

Yeah! Shut down the port! Haha! That'll show em! Those truckers that are paid by the mile, those captains who are paid by net volume of goods, and those dockworkers are all really going to appreciate this. 99% baby! Woo! We're really winning now, boys. Or...something. What does the port have to do with this? Is the port 1%? Sure, why not.

The workers have gone on strike because their jobs are shit.
I just realized something. What if there's some more police brutality against veterans next week. Since Veterans day is on the 11th, which is next Saturday. Suddenly, Fox shuts up for 5 minutes.
Gotta love all the ignorance going around eh?
It's almost a solid object theres so much.
Given the scarcity of good jobs and massive pools of qualified, unemployed people, I'm surprised everyone that skipped work to protest wasn't fired on the spot.
This is awesome, absolutely awesome.

Why is it i can only think of this when hearing about oakland?

This is exactly the type of results we should all want from the protests. Nonviolent results that make a bigger statement than the protests themselves. Hell, just the fact that some of the businesses have gone cash only is brilliant.
I know right. Decent people exist. It's a sad thing that such a fact can be news sometimes.
Wait, what's happening? That nor'easter took me out of the loop.
Given the scarcity of good jobs and massive pools of qualified, unemployed people, I'm surprised everyone that skipped work to protest wasn't fired on the spot.
Because you can't be fired for no reason? Unless america has no employee protection laws.
Because you can't be fired for no reason? Unless america has no employee protection laws.
Corrupt as it may be, businesses find a way around it and watch a persons every move in order to get a reason.
second general strike in all of the united states since 1946 and guess what, the first one took place in oakland as well.
This is awesome, absolutely awesome.
Asteroidsrule: Why the disagree, just out of curiosity. It's people peacefully stepping up and saying they think something is wrong.
