Hey FP, I really need your help. - Sorry for the long post. So, this morning I was browsing the Steam Store when suddenly, a message popped up saying I had been logged in elsewhere. Obviously, I thought "WTF" and tried to log back in, which is were the problems started. When I tried to log back in, Steam now said that my password was incorrect, and after trying many times with the same results I assumed the worst. I managed to reset my password via steam, which was successful for about 2 minutes, until the same "you have been logged in elsewhere" message came back up. I once again tried to reset my password, although this time the SteamGuard authentication message never came. I also noticed in my inbox from earlier that day a number of automated messages from steam support about password changes. After this, I logged out of my Hotmail account and checked my steam community profile. I could only find it by searching my steam nickname, where I noticed that my name had been changed to "Robyrantor" and that I was currently online. So now of course, I pretty much knew that I had been hijacked. I made a steam support ticket about it as I was told that this was the best course of action, but soon noticed that after 10 minutes when I refreshed the page it said "Account Expired" with some random code underneath in % marks. After this my friends told me that I had disappeared from their friends lists. Now I was pretty much fucked, so I opened up another ticket under a different support account, which was for some reason closed after about 5 minutes, along with the next 2 I made. What is especially weird about this however, is I tried logging back in to my hotmail. where I found that my password no longer worked, and I also found the same for a few other sites such as Gumtree. (Possibly a keylogger?) Please help me, I just need some help in what to do next as I have already lost my whole steam account and cannot access my email address to reset any of my passwords.
Best course of action would be to do a virus/spyware scan and once that's done change all your passwords
ok, first install malwarebytes and run that if you are able to next, IMMEDIATELY change the password for paypal/any other REALLY important stuff third, try to change your email accounts password from a different computer- perhaps a library computer or something similar. from there you can try to contact those different websites and recover your password. Use a different computer to submit a steam ticket; it sounds like yours is compromised. After the valve team responds and you get your account back, you should reformat your computer. Or you could reformat first then submit a steam ticket. I'm sure you'll get your account back, don't panic.
Right guys, a quick update. I did one better then run an anti-virus, I completely formatted an reinstalled Windows, and changed my passwords on Paypal/Removed my card from Amazon and such. Hopefully the keylogger will have completely disappeared, and I have installed some anti-virus software for now. My passwords are still not working however, and I will try from a different computer or my phone later. Thanks for the quick responses though
Steam are excellent with this kind of stuff - try not to panic. As the above posters said, scan. In the mean time, if you can get access to some other temporary computer, go and do that while it scans. On the temporary computer, change passwords for absolutely everything you can think of, starting with the important stuff. This should take about 30 minutes or so, so the scan should be chugging along still. in the mean time, think of all the possible ways you can get access to your email. That is the most important thing at this stage. Valve can see the recent actions are from a different IP, I'm sure they can reverse anything our hijacker does. What email service do you use? If you're a GMail man, you're in luck. Google are even better at security - you should be able to have the account password reset through your phone. If not, tell us what and I'll see if I can find anything useful. Use the lost password feature on the email account, anyway. Make sure this is done on a different, secure, computer. You should be able to have your password reset through security questions and birth date etc. If you have all this and your important websites secure, you can chill out for a while. Open a ticket from the secure computer with Valve and do something to pass the time [editline]31st March 2012[/editline] Ninja OP [editline]31st March 2012[/editline] Oh, and best of luck to you
Thank you so much Trumple, I do not use Gmail however I have tried resetting my hotmail password, and I needed some random information that I could not remember for the life of me. This included things like "recent subject fields" and "recently contacted people". I hope they can see that I am who I say I am, and I can reset my password. Will hopefully keep you updated if anything occurs.
No problem, I can only imagine the feeling So I looked around a bit, the only way I can see to contact Microsoft with regards to Hotmail is through the forum: [url]http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/hotmail?auth=1[/url] They seem pretty active of there, it's worth getting someone's attention on there. Maybe they will give you an email address you can follow it up in private on
