I have about 1TB of external hard drive space, and I don't know what to put on it, generally because I have a FTP server to save my other shit like Linux Distros.
What should I put on this?
Backups.
Backups.
I don't need backups. By the way, your title is gone
I don't need backups
So you prefer to cry?
obligatory "porn" post,
But really, if you have the space just use it as backup.
No matter how good you are at computers it doesn't hurt to backup.
partition 200gb for backups and the rest for data, this is commonly stored in 0's and 1's
For me, i use mine for games for the most part.
It never hurts to backup
I use them for rips of my install disks
(Those that I have purchased)
Stuff you want to share with mates, LAN's, etc.
So not porn, unless that's their thing.
The only option is backing up and...

My system never dies, when it does, I just use the "Repair your computer" option on the setup disk.

Are you really trying to image your drives to a 1tb external drive

Famous last words. "Repair your computer" will do nothing if the hard drive is dead. Always backup.

No

My hard drive never dies, I've had this for a while now (1 year)
I had a brand new WD drive fail on me after a month. NEVER assume your hard drive won't just die unless you're willing to deal with losing files.

:frog:
1 year is barely any time, it still has many years of potential failure ahead of it.
What's the point? I can just redownload everything, and plus most of my programs are saved on my FTP.

Hard drives never last forever. In my PC right now, I've got 3 drives. One of them is over 4 years old. One is a year old. The other is 6 months old, after the first one died within two weeks of purchase. Any one of my drives could fail any second and any data on them would be lost forever.
Use your external drive to back up everything that matters to you. Photos, music, things that'll take a long time to reacquire. It could be as simple as copy pasting stuff over every once in a while. It's probably a better idea to look in to backup software that'll run backups in the background.
I cannot stress how important it is to back up your data.
Just get Acronis True Image or something similar and use the disk for backups.
Either that or take it apart and use it internally.

But all you can really do with an external hard drive is back stuff up. So maybe you should sell it.

that shit sucks imageX.exe all day erry day
Seeing as your hard drives are indestructible, I'll take your 1TB disk, I only have 1 running hard drive and I need to backup in case it fails (mine isn't one of those fancy hard drives that lasts forever).

I don't like using disk images for backups since it won't help you if you get a virus or otherwise fuck shit up

I used Windows Backup, what are some good backup programs? (Free, no warez please)

Manually taking backup of important files onto whatever backup drive of your choice.
Generally that's better than any backup program, since you'll only have a backup of the files you've chosen.

I have tons of images that I couldn't bare to lose.
There are hundreds of photos taken over the course of several years, that commemorate many of my most fondest memories and events. These images are ones I wanna look back on in years and be able to remember my childhood. If I where to ever lose these, I would be devastated.
Hard drives break, just this year I've taken care of my parrents 120gb Maxtor drive which lasted maybe 5 years, my sisters 360gb WD drive which barely lasted 2 years and a friends external 1tb seagate which I believe lasted around 3 years.
Because of this I run a RAID1 setup with my two oldish samsung 250gb drives containing things I don't want to lose and things that are irreplaceable.

One year isn't enough to define a drive as "never dying". Never backing up is pure foolish, but if you feel your data is safe then whatever.

Tell me where you can download the following:

Pictures/Videos of your family, vacation, etc

The PhD Thesis/important letter/book your are currently writing on now for days/weeks/months/years.

Savegames of a games you played

... infinite list expandable ...
Exactly because of your attitude, we got those people in various forums crying for a "solution for their broken hard-disk".
Or in other words: Do backups
I backup my whole PC every 3 months completely to external drives and soon to "internal drives" which I can switch using a removable drive-bay. Backups are placed at my place and one at my parent's so that in case of fire, all my stuff is still safe. (Backup-Size is approximately 1TB)
To be honest LinuX, you're dumber than I thought.
