A referendum held on the subject in 1999, which if successful would have seen a president appointed by the Parliament, failed to garner enough support. Speaking at a book launch in Melbourne, Mr Shorten said the dream of Australia having a head of state needed to be renewed. "Let us have the courage to ask ourselves if we measure up to more than just a grab-bag of cliches," he said. "Let us declare that our head of state should be one of us. "Let us rally behind an Australian republic - a model that truly speaks for who we are, our modern identity, our place in our region and our world." Mr Shorten also called on supporters to back the recognition of Indigenous Australians in the constitution. "Let us be brave enough to demand constitutional recognition for the first Australians, and let us breathe new life into the dream of an Australian head of state," he said. Forty-five per cent of voters supported a republican Australia at the 1999 referendum, but in recent years support has dwindled.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-01-25/bill-shorten-renews-call-for-republic-ahead-of-australia-day/6045222
I wouldn't mind seeing Australia become a Republic, but why the bloody hell is Shorten bringing this up when there are a metric fucktonne of more pressing issues..? There are talks about bringing back Industrial Relations, that would be something Shorten could comment on. He truly is an awful opposition leader.

Reminder that iyool 2015 we still have a hereditary monarch.
having a queen is like having a friendly old grandma that you don't pay much attention too but know is there for you
The Monarchy is great. Why would you want to rid of it?
Shorten wants Abbott to win apparently, labor should give him the boot if they want to win the next election, he was one of the worst choices for opposition leader, only thing he had going for him was popularity within the labor party.
The Monarchy is great. Why would you want to rid of it?
Because we aren't really part of it, our only ties to the UK involve the appointment of the governor general, but who becomes the GG is decided by our PM. We wouldn't be leaving the commonwealth, just appointing the GG ourselves (Although I'd prefer a greater shakeup of the parliamentary system, which isn't going to happen.)
The Monarchy is great. Why would you want to rid of it?
Its tacky and old and especially irrelevant in Australia
As long as we still keep Commonwealth of Australia and just deroyal everything then meh we'd be on a same system where the president is chosen by parliament and the PM is again the head of everything

Useless, no point and too much effort. Got bigger issues to deal with.
Actually completely worth it. I mean if we pay lip service to the idea of everyone being equal we might as well go through with it

There's always going to be more "pressing issues".

It just sounds like you want to burn a bridge with the UK and rename the office of Governer-General who for all intensive purposes is a president. There's no good reason for Australia to become a republic, or at least there's no good reason to ditch the monarchy either.
exactly the same argument with new zealand. as much as I don't care about the monarchy and whatever, it's just a waste of resources to become a republic. it changes literally nothing.

I'm fine with us being a Republic as long as the President is nominated in the same way that the Governor-General is now (and has similar powers, so is therefore mostly ceremonial). There is no need to introduce partisanship to the position through public elections, as the Governor-General does a pretty fine and impartial job in the current circumstances.
"Maybe if they hate Tony Abbot enough I can become president and put my head on all the money. Then people would finally remember who I am" It's the perfect plan.
Damn, I never knew Australia is Queen Elizabeth's bitch. And I even went to geography competitions in high school. I got it all upside down.
"If Tony can be the worst prime minister ever Then maybe I can be the worst president ever"
I fail to see what actual practical differences this will make to Australia.
You're going to be a republic, and you are going to like it! end of story!
Motherlander here. I say go for it.
"If Tony can be the worst prime minister ever Then maybe I can be the worst president ever"
In all seriousness, who would replace the Queen on the currency?
In all seriousness, who would replace the Queen on the currency?
George Washington
Forgive me my ignorance but what exactly would this change in Australia?
