I know we knew this and everything, but it's still a piss take. It feels weird reading this free mod being sold after the shitstorm a few days ago with paid mods. Does anyone know if the people that contributed to the mod before it went paid are getting some percentage of sales too? ALSO I'm sure someone will port the maps over to the free version too
10 years and still out before ep3
Also bms xen cant be directly ported to the free mod since xen will be using source 2013, while the old mod is using a much older version of source
Does anyone know if the people that contributed to the mod before it went paid are getting some percentage of sales too?
They are according to Famguy
:snip:
I know a lot of people are mad about this being a paid mod, but they're comparing a workshop addon to a fully fledged game with hours of gameplay, the price for BMS is justified.
This isn't a mod, it's a standalone remake. It's not like they took Half-Life 1 and put a horse with a vagina in it and wanted you to pay for that. And I'm glad I bought it.
I'm probably not going to end up getting this unless I happen to get 10 free ameri-bux. I would enjoy playing it, but I'd really only play it once. For that price you got garrysmod 10, which at its time was a lot more worth it then a remake.
Well, the FREE mod has 7-8+ hours of gameplay, so it's totally understandable
Fuck, This is stupid. Screw you Valve.
Do your research
Fuck, This is stupid. Screw you Valve.
How is this Valve's fault? They didn't make the game. Also unlike most $19.99USD games which come to $24.99CAD, this is only $21.99 CAD
They've spent TEN YEARS working on it, I don't mind paying for something I'm going to enjoy, they made it, they can do what they want with it, I see no argument as to why it should be free?
To me, the problem isn't about if they deserve some money or not (i think they do), it's how they've handled it. The mod was released in an unfinished state years ago, which i don't think should have happened, and now years after it still isn't done but if you want to get the eventually finished version, it'll now cost money. So it's a choice between an unfinished mod, or an unfinished mod that will eventually be finished but you have to pay.
an unfinished mod that will eventually be finished but you have to pay.
Then wait until it is out of Early Access and buy the 'full' version, and then you won't be paying for an unfinished game. Also it isn't a mod anymore. They are running on their own modified branch of the source engine instead of through the Mod Base. They have a licence and everything.
How is this Valve's fault? They didn't make the game.
Valve gave the go-ahead for the game to be available on steam for money.

I don't think they'd object to modders posting the levels across (look at Surface Tension Uncut having more levels added to match up with Half-life), and I'm intrigued as to what makes it so difficult to make the devs not bother themselves.

[editline]11th May 2015[/editline]
Valve gave the go-ahead for the game to be available on steam for money.
So? It was still the teams decision to sell it in the first place. Read this post as to why they decided to sell it http://forums.blackmesasource.com/index.php/Thread/17088-Happy-Birthday-Half-life/
I know we knew this and everything, but it's still a piss take. It feels weird reading this free mod being sold after the shitstorm a few days ago with paid mods.
You can't compare this to a bunch of Skyrim mods. This, by all means, is not "just a mod" anymore, it's a standalone game that happens to run on the Source engine. Counter-Strike started off as a free mod for Half-Life, Garry's Mod started off as a free mod for Half-Life 2, Team Fortress started off as a free mod for Quake, etc. etc. etc.
While I think its kinda scummy to say they're working on the Xen levels and then say this AFTER you start accepting payments for the mod, we need to remember that this "mod" has become far more than just a mod. It has become more or less a full blown remake of Half Life with its own multiplayer. Asking $10 just for this seems more than fair, and if anything alittle humble. I'd be willing to throw down more just for the amount of content it has. Is it sketchy that they're doing this? No, because they mentioned they were doing this back in 2013. Does their commitment to quality make it worth it? Fuck yes. This has become so much more than other mods could dream of.
Is it sketchy that they're doing this? Yes.
How is it "sketchy" in the slightest? They even mentioned that they were working on a standalone paid version back in 2013, same thing with Xen
People are so god damn spoiled. If you seriously think you are entitled to play this for free then you are insane.
I have no problem paying for a mod or game that's worth the money. But I was there the whole time. For years, it was never supposed to be paid. And now, they're telling us they're not even going to finish the free version, the one advertised all this time? Kind of a dick move. I'll buy it when it's on sale, but I despise the developers for making it a paid mod so late. You just don't do that. Let me remind you that Black Mesa was always supposed to be a huge thing, but it was also supposed to be free all along.
how is this any different than the transition from gmod 9 to 10 it's like the same thing lol
Let me remind you that Black Mesa was always supposed to be a huge thing, but it was also supposed to be free all along.
The mod was always supposed to be free, yes, and it still will be

Can someone give me a quick overview of what it covers? Last I heard it was just the period in between Half-Life 1 and Half-life 2.
The mod was always supposed to be free, yes, and it still will be
It was also always supposed to be finished. And it won't be both.
How is it "sketchy" in the slightest? They even mentioned that they were working on a standalone paid version back in 2013, same thing with Xen
The mod has been worked on by various people for over 10 years. I just hope everyone who contributed received some payment.

Last I heard it was just the period in between Half-Life 1 and Half-life 2.
I have no idea where you heard this, because that is entirely untrue. It's a complete remake of HL1 in the Source engine (which they have now modified to suit their needs), and so far, they have everything done all the way to Lambda Core. They just have to finish Xen, add more stuff to Deathmatch, and polish up/fix the rest of the game.
I wish they'd just be good on their word and release Xen for the free version. The Steam version can keep the multiplayer mode and the Workshop.
They spent 10 years making this complete overhaul and people complain that they charge money. Lmao get over yourselfs.
