If you had a laptop and a desktop with the same spec, would games perform the same?

Because I'm buying a laptop and I've heard from (not very trustworthy) friends who say that games run worse on a laptop then a desktop, even with the same spec.
Surely if they're the same spec is wouldn't make a difference? Thanks.
Heat issues.
The problem is that gpu models specs don't transfer over from a desktop to a laptop so that even if a laptop says it has a 5870 it doesn't mean it will perform as well as a desktop 5870.
With the SAME specs - yes. But if the laptop has mobility units, they don't represent the desktop units. The desktop units are stronger.
Well, theoretically, yes, but in reality the "same" specs aren't actually the same.
Not at all. For example, the laptop version of a desktop video card would be smaller, with less components, use less power and have a lower clock speed resulting in less frames per seconds while for example playing games.
However, in my experience they tend to run a little cooler because of the lower power usage/clock speed etc...
The power consumption differences between laptops and PCs are great. They would indeed not perform the same, not to mention the heat and mobility issues.

This is of course offset by the fact that all the components are packed into a tiny box together, which generally creates temperatures hot enough to fry your balls off if you attempt to use your new laptop on your lap.
I'm pretty sure you'd fry your balls of if you put your nuts on a desktop video card as well. i'm talking about the actual temperature.
But i agree, it varies alot based on brand and architecture
But say for example I was buying a laptop to replace my old desktop that I bought in 2005?
With it's 512MB of RAM and GeForce 6200 it's hardly a beast. If I were to buy a laptop released this year or last year, surely it would perform better?
Yes, it certainly woud, but that's just because your desktop is a piece of crap. Buy a new desktop, not a laptop.
I'd say you should get a laptop. That way you wont be stuck inside your room or basement or wherever your PC is stationed all day. That way you can easily bring it to a friends house or something, i do it all the time.
but yeah, as mentioned earlier it would preform significantly worse than a desktop.
just tell us weather you want a desktop or a laptop and a budget, and we'll see what we can do m'kay?
