Genetics pioneer J. Craig Venter announced Thursday that he and his team have created artificial life for the first time.
Using sequences of genetic code created on a computer, the team assembled a complete DNA of a bacterium, then inserted it in another bacterium and initiated synthesis, or in Venter's words "booted up" the cell.
In a statement, Venter called the results "the proof of principle that genomes can be designed in the computer, chemically made in the laboratory and transplanted into a recipient cell to produce a new self-replicating cell," controlled only by the synthetic genome.

Two-hundred dollars say there will be massive religious protests.
Religion will just come with excuses, such as "A cell isn't life".

Oh good so a ball of cells isnt either, meaning abortions are perfectly ok.

:iceburn:
Well okay, only in some ways.
Didn't the Vatican comment on this and say it was "interesting"?
I am not going into space with that thing.
It shall backstab me and let alien lifeforms rape us to bits for company interests.
did you just crawl out of the petri-dish?

Who cares what they say/think anyway?
Apparently there are concerns that one of the cells could escape and develop a new, deadly and contagious disease, cause an epidemic, and be responsible for the extinction of life on Earth providing we'll have no resistances to it that would build up after generations and generations.

Wait, you sure I didn't? I like synthetic life.
I wonder how long it'd be before someone makes a synthetic macroscopic lifeform? (an animal made from synthesized DNA)

But it wouldn't have any resistances to all the diseases we have either?
Who cares what they say/think anyway?
I certainly do. The sooner we can close the gap between science and religion the better, and seeing as the vatican has a fairly large amount of people following it, anything that gets them on our side is a positive.
