Hey!
I have been thinking about buying an iPhone 4 for like £100-140. Not possible I know but I have been thinking about buying a signal faulty iPhone 4 and repairing the antenna. In some cases its the antenna cable which comes loose or a firmware update that breaks it and its as simple as jailbreaking to fix (Or something along those lines). Is there anything else you guys might know about the iPhone that makes it loose its signal? Im happy with disassembling the phone and replacing parts.
I know I could just get an iPod 4th Gen (cant afford the latest) but the iPhone is better because it has a GPS and a few other functions like more ram that could be very helpful when I do iOS dev. I wouldnt really care if I couldnt get the antenna to work but it would be awesome if possible.
There is also the possibility of the ESN block which could be a spanner in the works.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
You say you can't afford a 5th gen iPod Touch(I just got one for $200 that someone didn't want from Xmas) but you are planning on doing iOS development which means you have to own a Mac. No offense but there seems to be some disconnect there since Macs are quite expensive. Honestly if you want to do iOS development I would recommend having a newer device than the 4 which will be EOL as of iOS 7. The iPod Touch 4 is forever on iOS 6 so definitely don't consider that. But if you're doing iOS development an iPod Touch 5 or a 4S should be possible.
I do already have a Mac handy which does iOS dev well.
I have been looking and I have seen them for 160-170 in good condition.
So I suppose thats good. I can stretch to that. I dont mind it being EOL by iOS 7. My Apps are never for the latest version of iOS and my training requires a lower iOS version anyway.
Even if I did need iOS7 I could probably hack it to run it if I was desperate.

I really doubt you could hack it to run iOS 7, because that just doesn't happen with iOS. If you don't need to keep the app up to date then I guess an iPhone 4 would be fine. It's just not something I'd suggest for doing app development in the hopes that you'll sell it and make a tidy sum.
To be honest I'm not into iOS dev for the cash. Its just for a bit of fun and learning.

Your post indicates that you're using Android, why not try Java/Android development if it's just for fun and learning?
If you already know Cocoa/Objective-C though, never mind.

Yeah that would be an idea, but I do already know ObjC.
In the end I managed to get a decent deal on an working iPhone 4.
