Due to a Daft punk thread not being anywhere to see, I decided to make my own, so here goes.

What is Daft Punk
Daft Punk is a French electronic/house music duo, made by Guy-Manuel de Honem-Christo, and Thomas Bangalter.
They're widely known for their album "Discovery" and for some of their singles such as "Robot rock" "Da Funk" "Digital Love" and "Around the world".
Daft Punk has also become popular due to their robot costumes used on public display, as in interviews and concerts.
Their latest project has been in the works for two years, and is the collaborative work with a ninety piece orchestra, in creating the soundtrack for the movie "Tron:Legacy"
The story
Daft Punk first started around 1993 when Thomas and Guy-Manuel had just left the earlier band indie rock band "Darlin'" (named after the song by Beach Boys, which was an inspiration for the band) which had lacked overall success. An English magazine had reviewed the music as being some "daft punk", which Thomas and guy chose to find amusing, rather than anything else, and then used it as their new band name. They were using only a drum machine, sampler and synthesizer, when they released their first single "The new wave" which later in the final version was to be named "Alive" for the album homework. Later they released the single Da Funk, which was a success and eventually, they were offered a bunch of record deals, but denied most of them for artistic freedom, something which they meant they would have with Virgin records.
In 1997 their first album "Homework" was released, with successes such as "Around the world". They continued on to "Discovery" which was the album that made them known, all around the world.
A movie called "Interstella:5555 The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, was a kind of musical based on the album, that later in 2003 made them even more popular with the release of the movie.
Discovery had smash hits such as "One More Time" "Digital Love" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and generally had very favourable reviews.
In 2005 they released their next album "Human After All". The album wasn't as well received as the previous albums, as the tracks were very "mechanical" and repetitive. It did bring some hits as "Robot Rock" and "Technologic" though.
The bad reception of the album was later apologized by the reviewers and fans, when Daft Punk in 2007 toured the world, on the tour they called "Alive 2007". The music consisted of remixes across all of their albums, and few other songs such as "Music Sounds Better With You" by Stardust, which was a band making just the one single. The tour was later released as an album, which again brought popularity back to the band.
The nature of the costumes
Daft Punk never made a concert, or public appearance without costumes, although in the start they used random Halloween costumes, and such. The duo never really liked the star system, and the publicity that came with being widely known, so instead they hid themselves in robot costumes, which ended up being widely recognized. They've used different robot costumes through time, although the main look has stayed mostly the same. At the release of Discovery, they had masks, which had LED displays, that could do various things such as show scrolling text, images, and music visualization. The cost of each of these masks were said to be around 45.000 dollars. They were later replaced by simpler masks, and leather clothing, with "Daft Punk" being written on the back.
Future projects
Though it is currently unknown what Daft Punk will do in the future, it is said that they might do a world tour, as a old quote by the representatives of the band said that they would be interested in visiting China in 2010/2011, after a hoax tried to scam people to pay for a concert that never happened in 2009.

Thanks for reading!

Daft punk is awesome, thanks for making this thread dude really liked it.

No problem. I just recently watched tron, and I fell in love with daft punk all over again, so badly that I felt like making this thread. Also I'm considering getting back to playing piano/keyboard/synth now. But synth's are so goddamn expensive. Daft punk is nowhere near the only reason I want to play again though.
But yeah, I like them, even though I know how repetitive, and heavy inspired their music. I actually like some of the music from Human after all best, some of the repetitive songs, it's just that daft punk is one of the few bands that are able to create such a perfect melody that it can be played over and over again without it ever gets old. Though it does get old to some, but it'll still be a long time for me.
I was at the the Grammy Museum in LA last week, took these two pictures while I was there.

Daft Punk are awesome. Homework's a damn good album.
Great thread, man.
daft punk do cool stuff in their gigs and all, but their song just have nothing to them. they might be catchy but that's literally about it

I partly agree with you, though I think some of the songs have more to them. But the really catchy ones are also really catchy. I think that's the point too.
It's like movies. Not every movie needs to be Requiem for a Dream. Sometimes you just want to watch Anchorman or Commando

Couldn't have put it better myself.
I. Fucking. Love. Daft Punk.
Gotta listen to some homework.
I'll hug Daft Punk some day.

If you're not going to listen to the whole album I recommend Burnin', Teachers and of course Around the world. The whole album is worth a listen though, in my opinion.

Don't forget Revolution 909, Fresh and Alive! The latter I think is the finest song they've ever produced.

Yeah, I think (just about) every song on the album is great, but I just tried to sum up the songs that would appeal to the average listener. You know, the most people listen to Discovery exclusively, since it's much more accessible.
I never don't want to watch Commando.
They feed my robot obsession like nothing else

You know, I'd also love to see a studio release of the remixes they did for Alive 2007. They were good enough to release on their own album minus the crowd noise. (Which drives me NUTS)

True, but with the crow noise taken in consideration it's fantastic, which actually is a bit sad, because it would have been ridiculously awesome if it wasn't there.

The image disappeared from the OP somehow, probably because I was hot-linking, working on getting it back

They're pretty cool! I like the suits. And the Tron Soundtrack was great. But I think they're slightly overhyped.

You do realize that they're sampler artists?

Yes, but they aren't entirely, and yes they're over-hyped, I can't deny that. I still like them anyway.
I've always wanted their helmets. :saddowns:
Don't we all? Guy-Manuel's helmet is like, the coolest thing ever.
Also, just got my copy of Electroma in the post. I'll watch it tonight. I know it's a bit of a boring attempt at an arthouse flick, but hey, it's Daft Punk.
I like Bangalters helmet better :buddy:
Their music videos are weird, like those cartoon ones with the really lanky people. It's like Mannerist anime...
Mannime.
Bought the TRON soundtrack the other day. Love these guys.

Hmm, it shouldn't be too hard to make from what I know. The fluorescent thread is called elwire, and you can buy it from the net quite easily. I will never be bothered to make anything like that though.
