• [X360] Console selection and modding

I've recently been trying to decide on whether or not to buy an xbox 360. The most smart thing in my eyes is to buy the arcade edition because it is cheaper and I have numerous hard-drives of varying sizes laying around to replace the original 256 (who has a console with 256m of hard drive these days?) with one of a larger capacity. So there goes one of the advantages of going premium/elite. The colour isn't an issue as I've been wanting something to mod for ages (laptops aren't the easiest to mod imho). Another issue is whether or not the arcade can play on live. I've looked around to try and find this out but I can't get a definitive answer. I have read that the arcade plays only stripped down versions of the games. Is this true? Another thing. Is it possible to get an arcade edition with HDMI output? Lastly, are the internals (in terms of graphics, cpu and ram) the same? I don't want to fork out for an xbox just to find the picture doesn't look as nice.
Do you have X360 HDD's laying around? You can't use standard HDD's for the 360. Also, none of the specs that could possibly decrease the performance in games have been changed. I don't think you can get them with HDMI outputs. You can use them on Xbox Live like any other Xbox, but you should have a harddrive if you really want to use it.
If you actually want an Xbox, buy an elite or super elite. If you are going to destroy it by modifying it, get a broken one off of ebay for $30. Are the specs on an arcade worse than elite.
No. Minus hardrive space and video connectivity.

My friend did it and it works perfectly.
If you actually want an Xbox, buy an elite or super elite. Replacing the hard-drive isn't going to fix it. The replacement of the hard-drive involves no irreversible changes to the console.
Don't listen to the above idiots. The Arcade models have come with HDMI for quite a while now. And you can install a 2.5" HDD into a 360, though ideally you'll want to get an old 20gb 360 drive and just replace it inside of that, instead of trying to just mount a drive somewhere and getting it to connect. The Arcades can go on Live just fine, and all the current models have the same insides.

All xbox 360s manufactured at this time are have exactly the same internals the only difference is what it comes with. All xboxs can play live but you need an xbox harddrive for extras like map packs and some games require a harddrive. The arcade won't come with an hdmi cable but you can just use any hdmi cable unless you need separate audio but you can probably buy the adapter at a used game store. Also because you want to mod your new console I suggest you get an arcade because you used to be able to get a harddrive and attach it to the stata port on the inside or something (do research). Also welcome to the world of xbox modding :) http://www.llamma.com/ ^ Bookmark I have for xbox modding stuff good resource and some good stuff in their store. They also have stuff for wii and 2 cases for ps3.
Do they? Where's mine?
They do. I bought an Arcade last November and it has an HDMI port.
Do they? Where's mine?
Depends how old the stock was. I got mine in around October 2008 and came with an HDMI port on the back.
All Xbox 360s with Zephyr motherboard (First found in May 2007) or newer will have HDM.
All Xbox 360s with Zephyr motherboard (First found in May 2007) or newer will have HDM.
Yeah, this is true. Was talking to my friend about it today. Don't the ones without HDMI also have 50% RRoD or is that another different mobo?
Dealextreme has some really nice deals on Xbox 360 hard drives. Personally, I don't like my 360. My brothers play it a lot and I play PURE with friends sometimes, though I still keep my original Xbox around for XBMC as well as a large amount of games I borrowed and downloaded to the hard drive. With the 360, I can't access my Windows XP Pro computer I use as a server without installing an extra program.
Yeah, this is true. Was talking to my friend about it today. Don't the ones without HDMI also have 50% RRoD or is that another different mobo?
I believe that there was a version before the HDMI output ones which had the RROD fix. My Xbox has just died from the RROD, 3 years and 5 days after I bought it. Even though Microsoft's RROD warranty is 3 years, they will still repair / replace it and they even pay for the shipping both ways - I think that speaks a lot about Microsoft's customer service and anybody with one which "should" have RROD problems should not worry about it.
Why not go to console subforum? The majority of us here, as far as I have seen, has a dislike for the console scene.
wtf i sent my old broken xbox to microsoft and then sent me back a brand new model. only thing new was a third USB port on the back :(

Guys, what should I do with my 360. It RROD'd for the second time, and it's out of warranty. I don't really play it much but I have like 6,000 gamer score.
Mail it to me and I'll repair it for you
I can pay in zambian money, let me get the prince before any decisions are made.
I can repair it too I just would have to order a couple of parts.
I can repair it too I just would have to order a couple of parts.
I'm not talking about the X-Clamp fix, but reflowing the GPU with a reflow station. X-Clamp doesn't work all the times as all it does is to increase the pressure and applies force to the GPU and crushes the solder balls together, opposing to actually melt the solder back to place by reflow.
