• Computer is pretty fucked

My girlfriend has major issues with her laptop. As of "recently", it has started to "not work". Not work as in, the windows doesn't respond, the harddrive used space has increased (from 49% to 60-something) without any data being moved or added to the drive. We've tried scanning it with Microsoft Security Essentials in Safe Mode, and ran CCleaner and cleaned the system, and the registry as well, and ran a defrag with defraggler. After that, we tried updating the entire system again with Windows Update in Safe Mode, and installed the latest drivers for the integrated video card. And sometimes it seemingly works fine, just to stop working at random. Sometimes the folders freeze and stop working, and sometimes WINDOWS stops working and has to restart. It even does this in safe mode. It wasn't caused by recently installed software, as no software has been installed as of "recently". What do? edit It seems that it works fine in Safe Mode, I just got it wrong. There was one time because it was overloaded, but otherwise not. Does this change anything? edit After scanning for the entire night, MBAM didn't find anything.

Download SpyBot Search & Destroy.
It sounds like the hard drive is being corrupted to me. I do not know everything about computers though, but that's what it sounds like. If you've handled this laptop roughly, this may be the case. Or you have some malware that is insanely burrowed into your system, though that's less likely.
49% to 60%? Impressive! Give it a scan with MBAM and see what results you get.

(Installing MBAM asap and running it, will post results when it's done) edit After scanning for the entire night, MBAM didn't find anything.
Sounds like HDD problems. I would try to back up your stuff, and format. If the formatted HDD still messes up then maybe a new HDD is needed

Wouldn't it stop working in Safe Mode as well? Well, as I updated the OP with, it doesn't. It works "fine" in safe-mode (except it's Safe Mode), and there's no problems there.
Download the free version of HD tune. Do an error scan, if there are any red blocks then your HDD is on the way out.
I think the only thing to do now is... Backup, Format, Reinstall.
I think the only thing to do now is... Backup, Format, Reinstall.
NO. NO. NO NO NO. This should NOT be your first resort, it should be your LAST RESORT.
I think the only thing to do now is... Backup, Format, Reinstall.
Format re-install is not the answer to everything.

The whole point of safe mode is for the computer to use as little programs as possible to run, thus making it easier to run virus scans and what have you. HD Tune would be a good idea in my opinion. It will help you rule out the HDD if there isnt anything wrong with it.
I'm going to my girlfriends place (it's her laptop) tomorrow, and then I'll try running some HD Tune and memory tests and whatnot with some software that I'll bring along. I'll post results for each test here, so you can know everything that is going on, and help further investigate the problem and (hopefully) find a solution. Thanks for your time Facepunch!

Most Dell/HP computers seem to have a nice easy access HDD on the bottom or side that is held in with either 2/4 screws and either a slide bay or a small compartment. Sony Vaio laptops on the other hand are an absolute bitch to disassemble. They force you to tear the notebook pretty much down to the motherboard level just to gain access to the hard drive. The only time I have ever given praise to Dell would be on how easy it is to remove stuff like the HDD, RAM, LCD, and Keyboard for replacement. They know its gonna break shortly so they at least make it so you don't want to toss it out the 2nd story window.
