Hi guys,
my friend gave me his old gtx280 yesterday. He didn't want it because it kept crashing and he had just bought a 5870. So I told him I'd try to fix it. I installed it, updated the drivers and started up l4d2 to see if I could uncover the problem. I played a solid 2 hours without any problems so I decided to end on a good note and go to bed. I started playing today and right as I was about to enter a game It crashed.
The screen was blue and red pixels with a grey box around the mouse cursor. I booted up and tried again. This time it was a red screen with some of the red and blue pixels...(sorry for the shitty description)
I have a 700W psu. It Is a bfg gtx280 ocx. I have an eight pin coming from my psu and a molex to sixpin adapter (both molexes are plugged in).
I believe there is a lifetime warranty on this but i want to try to troubleshoot before I have to send it back.
Any help is appreciated. Even if it is just a theory or anything I'd like to hear it.
Thanks fp!!
-Joe
We can't fix it. Send it back and get new one

You may try microwave method, but why risk when you have warranty

Or nevermind. Google microwave method, if it doesn't work then send it back

Microwave method? Are you now trying to permanently destroy the card even further as well as taking out the microwave as well?

Well, I didn't know it was that dangerous. I'm sure there was thread about how good it works?
also dont sign your post's we dont need it
inb4 pics please
If the warrenty isn't there to help you, put it in the oven.

There is no such thing as the "microwave method".
inb4 pics please
what you gonna do? :downs:
Don't you use the oven?
It may be the overclock on the graphics card. You could try to set the clock speeds back a bit, if you want to save some time sending that in

It may not be called microwave method, but I'm sure good amount of people have done it. Which can resolder connections of artifacting card. And it can short few connections too, risky. But still worth trying

Or oven, not sure
It's definitiely the oven :v:

Do you have any idea how the oven trick work for a start?
Yeah sorry, it's oven. I don't know what exactly microwave is.

No I don't. How does it work?
To summerize: it melts the warped solder balls.
Good luck accomplishing it with a microwave, minus the guarenteed eletrical damages caused by the microwave radiations.
1) It IS the "oven method."

2) BFG has been liquidated. All standing warranties with them are null and void, and any attempt to start one will result in an apology letter like so:
BFG Technologies, Inc. is winding down and liquidating its business. Unfortunately our major supplier would not support our business. As a result we are returning your graphics card without being able to repair it. We apologize for the inconvenience.
As such, the oven method may be your only hope.
Wow. Yeah I got an email that said "we can not give you a refund or RMA at this time"
I'm not about to put my gfx card in the oven so there has to be SOMETHING I can do...
Any ideas besides the oven/microwave idea?
[editline]05:25PM[/editline]
LOL. Just read the oven thread. I might have to try that hahaha
Put it in the oven. You got nothing to lose.
I'm going to try other stuff first like switching around cables, different power options, ect.
I've never taken apart a gpu before...is there a tutorial someone could link me to?
I know the oven trick was popular way back in the 8800 days.
Any other suggestions besides putting it my oven?
I think I have the purple screen of death. The mouse turns into a grey box when it crashes. It crashes right when I'm about to enter a game (like l4d2).
I REALLY want to get this working guys. Any suggestions are appreciated!
Oven that fucker
Hahahaha
I might make a thread if I do lol.
Buy a heatgun
[editline]03:23PM[/editline]
Or a professional BGA rework station
It's almost certainly a hardware error (like a physical fault in the graphics card itself), not one we'll be able to fix.
It was working perfectly 2 days ago. It ran things well and really fast...what gives?
I'll try the oven Thing if my friend ok's it. It's still his technically.
Won't the plastic on the dvi/VGA ports melt? And the outer casing on the VRAM?
Also, to anyone else that has done it or looked into it, any tips? Temps, times, ect. ?
Thanks.
-snip mah dick-
Just oven the shit out of it.
Zelotional. HE CAN'T.
