[RELEASE]Former Vancouver Canucks forward Rick Rypien passed away at his home in Alberta.
Crowsnest Pass RCMP confirmed that they investigated a non-suspicious death in Coleman, Alberta, which is where Rypien's family is believed to reside.
"At this time, we won't be releasing names," police spokesman Const. Morgan Baceda said.
Baceda said police have already notified the next-of-kin.
Cousin Angela Rypien, a quarterback for Seattle Mist in the Lingerie Football League, wrote via Twitter: "R.I.P Rick Rypien, I love you so much and will miss you more than anything!"
Former teammate Bill Sweatt, from AHL's Manitoba Moose, wrote via Twitter Monday night: "Tragic story. #rickrypien found dead. This is just terrible. RIP rick. You were a great teammate and friend."
Rypien spent six seasons with the Canucks, much of it on the fourth line. He played his first game for Canucks on Dec. 21, 2005, and scored his first NHL goal in the first period of that game.
At 5'11", 190 pounds, Rypien regularly fought much larger opponents, something that endeared him to Canucks fans. During his time in Vancouver, he had 226 penalty minutes in 119 games.
Rypien went on a personal leave of absence from the team in November 2010 after he served a six-games suspension for pushing a linesman and grabbing a fan from the stands at a game against the Minnesota Wild on Oct. 19, 2010.
In March 2011, Rypien was loaned to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL for the remainder of the season.
Last month, the 27-year-old signed a one-year contract worth $700,000 with the Winnipeg Jets.
“It is with tremendous sadness that the Vancouver Canucks confirm the passing of Rick Rypien," said the team in a written statement. "Rick has been a beloved member of the Canucks family for the past six years. Rick was a great teammate and friend to our players, coaches and staff. We send our deepest condolences to the Rypien family at this most difficult time
This would be the second death of an NHL player in three months. Derek Boogaard, former Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers tough guy, died in May due to a fatal mix of alcohol and oxycodone. [/RELEASE]

Its a shame, you guys would've loved him. He was hands down the best fighter in the NHL in my opinion.

Somehow I doubt anything beyond her name and her relation to him was needed.
WHAT??! NOOOO!!!!
I fucking loved this guy, he was one of my favorite players on the Canucks. Always getting in fights, starting shit, pissing off the other team, such a badass
Fuck how am I going to sleep tonight

Oh yes there sure weren't as many people dying awhile ago.
Very sad to see him go. He had been battling depression for quite a while I heard. Seemed like he had finally gotten over it though.
