• Odd issue after installing new ram

Ever since I installed a new 16gb DDR3 kit, every so often my PC won't POST and the only way to fix it is to shut it off, unplug the power and flush the memory with the power button, it also fails to wake up from sleep. I'm not sure if it's faulty modules or a slight incompatibility with the motherboard. The ram is a 16gb kit of Crucial Ballistix Smart Tracer, and the Mobo is an Asus M5A97 r2.0
hi if this is the memory kit http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/blt2kit4g3d1608dt2txob and this is your motherboard https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/
It features dual-channel DDR3 1866 memory support
then i'm guessing your memory speed is to slow
I'm sorry, but it is not "too slow". It's run of the mill ddr3 ram speed. Seeing as it's "random" when this happens, have you tested the RAM? Might wanna run a memtest86. But to me, this really doesn't sound like a RAM issue. A power issue would make me think PSU. But then again, since it doesn't even POST, maybe your CMOS battery's borked or something? That's a stretch too though. Especially not a incompatibility issue since you've got ddr3 ram, and your motherboard supports it. But you should try that memtest to rule out any real issues with the ram. You could also try resetting your bios settings?

The PSU is pretty old, I've had it for a good few years so IDK if it's starting to degrade. I should also note that I have another 8gb kit I was using in the system now, and it's working fine. I'll have to run some tests to rule out bad modules.
My experience is it's best to go in to the bios and make all the proper memory settings manually. This includes making sure the voltage is set correctly. I've have had about a 50% success rate just letting it set up automatically, that's why I always do it myself now. Also, any time you install memory, if you are installing a dual channel kit just install one stick at a time and test it. Don't install both, since now you've complicated any troubleshooting that you might have to do. One stick, test, then swap it out for the other stick and test. If each passes, then the next test is both installed.
I have done that single stick swap method too and it does the same thing with both modules in either slot. I'm going to try them in my mothers PC just to see what happens.
