[RELEASE]Twitter is currently buzzing about the death of Dennis Ritchie, the visionary creator of UNIX and C, among other things. We hope it's just a false rumor. Story developing, we will be updating. Update: Unfortunately, it seems to be confirmed. Rob Pike, co-creator of the Plan 9 and Inferno OSes, who has worked with Ritchie for a number of years, and he's currently working for Google's GO language, posted this. I did not C that coming.
Damn, so many deaths this month relating to computers.
This sucks. May his work live on through all the UNIX distributions we have today.
Damn, so many deaths this month relating to computers.
you missed out on the celebrity death month what a party that was
you missed out on the celebrity death month what a party that was
When was that?
Today is an even sadder day.
Oh god, Bill Gates is up next.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
More upset about this than when Steve Jobs died. I bet he doesn't get anywhere near the same media coverage either.
So sad. So legendary a person.
all of these people dying just reminds me of my mortality
Someone keep an eye on Gates for a while...
Everyone fly your argv flags at half-mast tomorrow. We've lost a good man.
This guy should get more media attention than steve jobs to be honest - i mean he's one of the guys that made linux and/or programming the way it is today?
This guy should get more media attention than steve jobs to be honest - i mean he's one of the guys that made linux and/or programming the way it is today?
That's an understatement. UNIX is the underpinning of nearly every major OS. Everything follows that design, at least to some extent. Even Windows has parts of Unix in it. Linux may not have any of the old code, but it certainly follows the spirit of it. And OS X actually does have some of the Unix code in it. The C language was even more important. EVERY modern language derives from it. C++, Java, JavaScript, Lua, Perl, Python, PHP, ASP, and literally a million others. It was literally a programming revolution, and the language is STILL used to this day.
More upset about this than when Steve Jobs died. I bet he doesn't get anywhere near the same media coverage either.
It's a shame. Since without him we wouldn't have anything computer related. Steve Jobs? Maybe we would wait a year longer for wider coverage on MP3 players. Pixar would be the most effected.
Rest(IN_PEACE); //this is so uncreative but i couldnt think of anything else

When was that?
whenever m jackson died
Without this man, computers as they are today would not exist. He made a language so useful and a system so elegant that they actually became more common as the years went on. Every one of us has based our lives on his work. This is a sad day.
if (steveJobsHype < .3){ next = chooseRandomProgrammer(); kill(next); deathcount++; }
And to think that I was in my college's first 'Intro to Linux' class this semester.
I'm was 256th reader when I clicked this :(

How sad, I'm learning C currently aswell. Shame how this is getting little to no media attention.
How sad, I'm learning C currently aswell.
C is the greatest language ever. Once you know C, Java, C++, C# will be a breeze for you.
How sad, I'm learning C currently aswell. Shame how this is getting little to no media attention.
Most people don't know who he is and as a result wont really care. Rest In Peace :(
better than jobs, rip infact, i'm a certified unix network technician by trade.
I used a picture with this guy to make a 'yo momma' joke once. Goddamn...
