Amazon unveiled updates to its flagship tablet computer line with two Kindle Fire HDX devices that are lighter, faster and include on-demand tech support around the clock.
The Kindle Fire HDX comes in a 7-inch and 8.9-inch model and both feature what Amazon is calling HDX display, which is beyond high-definition. The 7-inch model has a 1,920 x 1,200 pixel resolution with a density of 323 pixels per inch, while the 8.9-inch model has 2,560 x 1,600 pixel resolution at 339 ppi -- higher than Apple's iPad. Amazon says a new feature dynamically adjusts the color and brightness of each pixel by using a unique algorithm.
Amazon is calling its 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX the lightest large-screen tablet at 13.2 ounces -- about 34 percent lighter than the last-generation Kindle Fire HD.

I know advertised space =/= real space but fucking WOW.
Do you really need a 1600p tablet? Battery life > screen res.
My 2012 N7 looks just fine at 1280 x 800, this is just stupid.
~$100 for a something with only slightly higher specifications than a nexus 7, with most likely a worse calibrated screen and overall build quality?
ontop of Amazon's shitty android framework, i would still buy a nexus 7 over this.

+ kindle fire devices are terrible looking. they look like cheap chinese ipad clones

I think it's quite embarrassing how tablets have such preposterously high screen resolutions but a desktop PC standard is 1366x768.

Jesus. And here I am browsing with a 1280 x 1024 17" screen.

that's laptop standard, desktop is 1080p.

The Kindle Fires are actually nicely built. Can't say anything about the HD or this, but the original feels really nice compared to a majority of cheaper android tablets. Installing your flavor of a stock/semi-stock android ROM only takes a few minutes, anyway.
Except of course the Nexus tablets runs full Android while the Kindle runs Amazon's "vision" of Android without the whole selection of Android apps.
i like my kindle fire gen 2
it's rooted too, so i got rid of amazon's bullshit

AFAIK most tablets and laptop panels nowadays uses a variant of the Displayport standard.
So with a simple adapter it can be hooked up to a Displayport output.
Amazing specs. Amazing screen according to tech websites.
Now we just have to graft stock android onto it because ew amazon android.

Amazons version of android looks better and imo runs better. I've had my kindle fire HD for a couple weeks now and I love it. Plus Im pretty sure there is a way to get google play on it.
should buy an iPad Mini instead
Does an Android OS actually take up 7.2GB?
Does an Android OS actually take up 7.2GB?
It's most likely bundled shit Amazon thinks is necessary on a tablet.
A clean & vanilla Android 4.2 install takes up less than 4GB
Amazon says a new feature dynamically adjusts the color and brightness of each pixel by using a unique algorithm.
So it's garbage because there's no reason to be altering the color of the display like that if it's a good display to begin with. It's just unnecessarily high res to appeal to people who buy their device based on the spec sheet.

Isn't that a bit... overkill?

It's not like Android users care about screen calibration, or the most popular Android devices wouldn't be the ones with gaudy horrible AMOLED panels.
Isn't that a bit... overkill?
Yes. It's a battery sucker and has no visible benefit. At best you need something around 280ppi on an 8.9" tablet to surpass 1 arcminute visual acuity.
Except of course the Nexus tablets runs full Android while the Kindle runs Amazon's "vision" of Android without the whole selection of Android apps.
then just sideload a different rom if you don't like the kindle branch yo
that's the best part about android, if you don't like something, you can just change it yourself
Isn't that a bit... overkill?
Ever since the retina iPad came out it is illegal to produce anything with a PPI of less than 300.
Does an Android OS actually take up 7.2GB?
I have an 8GB Nexus 7, and have 6GB free, So I'd say about 2.1GB.

The bloat of laptops and prebuilt desktops are leaking onto the tablet market.
Does an Android OS actually take up 7.2GB?
No, Amazon's bullshit apps and stuff that comes preinstalled apparently does.
Damn, 339ppi? That's a higher density than even the 4-onward iPhones, which as far as I was aware had the highest display density (326ppi) of any smart devices on the market. That said, the race has only gotten closer in recent years; even my enV Touch from 2009 has a 311ppi display and it's still technically a dumbphone.

Actually lots of Android phones use 400+ PPI displays, being 1920x1080 @ 4.7-5". It's a waste and drains battery unnecessarily but apparently the bragging rights are worth it.
i don't get the appeal of powerful tablets (and I'm not talking about shit like Windows tablet which has an x86 processor that can run regular programs). In the end everything is developed for midrange tablets, and most of them are just glorified internet machines anyway.

Galaxy S4 is worse
I'm still waiting for a Kindle Color to exist, because I have no reason for a generic tablet when I just want an e-book reader.

Colour E-ink screens doesn't exist, or isn't affordable for consumer devices yet.
