It's invite-only, but if one of your friends decides to wreck your perfect palace you can undo that easily
I sorta expected that it would hold some kind of exclusive feature but all it does is limit it :v:
But yeah not every parent knows how to host a dedicated server or a listen server.
Also, you cannot import custom maps.
Pretty neat IMO. Most people can't host their own server and this makes it as easy as realistically possible.

Sure you can, but usually you don't have the computer to do so and having a dedicated server is always better most of the time.

If your playing with just 2-5 friends it's very easy to run a dedicated server. If your running a server with more then 10 or so people you'll need a separate server. (Personal experience)

I used to run a dedicated server on the same machine I ran my games on, was just a first gen i5 quad core oc'ed to 3.5ghz, worked just fine even with 18-24 players. (6GB of ram at the time)
Have fun running a dedicated server off your main gaming rig.
Most 'gaming rigs' of today got 8+ GB of RAM and a pretty fast CPU so hosting a server is usually not a problem. Its more the connection speed that would bottleneck the fun.
I ran a 8 player server just fine.

That's like a plumber saying that Home Depot is ripping you off for charging you to unclog your bathroom drains.
Maybe you're a parent who just wants to set up a child-safe environment for your kids and their friends to play Minecraft, and you don't want to go through the hassle of setting up a server. $13 a month is a little steep, but if you all pitch in a few bucks it's not that bad.
everybody in this thread assumes parents would buy this to set up a safe server, when they probably wouldn't even let their kids online in the first place

I bet you didn't even ask for your parents' permission before logging on to disneychannel.com

I've spoken to quite a few parents through my website who were looking forward to Minecraft realms for just that reason.
The service was conceptualized as a way to assure parents that their kids would play on safe servers. It costs $13 per month for a subscription to your own self-contained world.
Safe in what ways? Sure it is invite only, but that still won't stop the kid from giving out invites like candy to their online "friends".
Launched in NA? Suprised that not in Europe.

I hosted my own server off of my gaming rig around 4 years ago. Had between 5-15 regular players and we never had any noticeable server lag.
I still wish minecraft had a more simple listen server function. It's not that hard to host a server but it would simplify things.
To me, this just seems like Mojang milking the market even more.
"Safe servers"? So, the server is magically safer because it's hosted by the game company, unlike server providers?
