how can one company reliably make a product worse with every update
how can one company reliably make a product worse with every update
Lots and lots of effort at this point, probably?
Shit, each Skype version since 4.2 has been the worst version ever lol
how can one company reliably make a product worse with every update
Maybe they saw YouTube and Facebook doing it and thought us millenials just expect the things we use to continually degrade
Did Skype go to shit before or after MS bought it?
Did Skype go to shit before or after MS bought it?
After they bought it and added Adverts, it went downhill very very fast
before that it was pretty solid. For its time? better than anything else out there. There was a moment where there wasn't really anything that was big enough to compete, MS bought it and slowly turned it into something worse and worse, but there wasn't really anything even still
By now though Discord came along with its ability to be instantly connected and ease of use. It's honestly a genius program too. Its so simple and efficient.

This is because there are over half a billion Skype users where as Discord has 25 million.

except it's chromium.
[editline]6th July 2017[/editline]
skype used to be a standalone application too, but microsoft axed that pretty swiftly
discord would be miles faster with a lot more functionality if it were built from scratch
not to mention actually secure, not that they would care :smug:
To be honest the worst update was when they made it so closing the application didn't close the application, just sent it to the task bar.
Am I missing something here?
Skype backlash: 'Worst update ever'
An update to Skype that adds colourful animations and Snapchat-style disappearing stories has been badly received by the app's users.
The software has been given one-star app store ratings since the update was launched.

This is the entire article, it got some bad reviews and changed some things?
I miss when I could still use HTML tags in the chat
After using the update for a while.
I agree.
It's really fucking aweful, you can't change your status (available, away, busy, invisible)
you can't sign out and quick sign in like before
you can't see who's online, not even when you message them.
it's also difficult to open a link. Instead of opening in your browser, it opens in itself, and usually in a way that makes it difficult to navigate or get back to your chat.
I don't know who greenlit this "update" but it's just terrible.
microsoft is so intent on running good programs into the ground with shitty updates and absolutely fucking horrible UI choices, it makes me laugh. who the fuck is over there saying this was a good idea? I am GENUINELY appalled that a group of people on planet earth think stuff like this is what Skype users want. what a bunch of fucking morons
[editline]6th July 2017[/editline]
I absolutely guarantee you that if tomorrow, Microsoft announced that both the PC and Mobile Skype platforms were reverting to their pre-MS buyout form and function, they would gain about 100 billion users at the push of a button. Absolute idiots.

Jesus FUCK we have to stop them. Anything that has the ability to instantly spawn 93 billion adult computer equipped people is absolutely too powerful for anybody to wield.
I remember when this update popped up on my phone and it instantly made simple actions so much more of a hassle. They navigation in the menus is awkward, it's totally cluttered and tries way to hard to look super hip yet the overall asethetic sucks ass.
"Please keep using us! Look, we're just like Snapchat and Instagram! Isn't that what you want?"
"Please keep using us! Look, we're just like Snapchat and Instagram! Isn't that what you want?"
Just another shining example of "you can't be everything and please everyone, and you should never try"
I use Skype for business. I can't see any benefit to this update other than annoying myself and my clients.

Are text statuses at least still a thing? Haven't changed mine in like 5 years and don't want to lose it to some stupid update

No text statuses
No text statuses
wow death to skype

Luckily it looks like Skype for Business isn't affected.
Or did you literally mean you use Skype... for business.
in which case I'm so sorry.

I'm so confused
how could they fuck it up this much? Phone users aren't so dumb that they need this
So they've managed to turn it in to both a worse version of Snapchat and a worse version of Skype.
gg microsoft

Microsoft has a gift for it
Tbh I just use teamspeak for all my communication needs. It's nice.

UWP skype has been around for a long while, it was in beta for a majority of that, it wasn't pushed into the mainstream until a while ago. It's different to the regular version of skype
and moreso to their linux client, which, got a mention earlier, as it, and discord both run on Electron 'basically flash in 2017' .js
Tbh I just use teamspeak for all my communication needs. It's nice.
teamspeak have been making some interesting changes recently, after many years since teamspeak 3, they released 3.1
addons are pretty easy to find and install, option account system to sync uniqueids, bit more hidpi updates around the corner.
waiting for them to drop telnet
i opened up this update on my phone when it first came out, saw the UI, and immediately sent my friend "lets switch to discord". congrats skype :trumpet:
I disabled automatic updates on the computer and phone once the new one showed up on my phone, and quickly reverted back to the previous update on my mobile device. Still, every time I start up the application it still brings a pop-up asking me to update. Skype's always been pretty trashy when it came to updates over the past couple years, but this one's really made me consider using the alternatives more frequently.
What ever happened to ventrillo?
