Apple is famous for its stranglehold on supply chains all over the world, and it’s now exerting influence with it. According to a report from the Chinese Commercial Times, Apple has forced ODM Pegatron to stop manufacturing the Asus Zenbook Ultrabook or risk losing its iOS device contract. It was a no-contest for Pegatron, which will be ceasing its Zenbook production by the end of March.
This isn’t necessarily a sign of things to come, though. Cupertino-based Apple was apparently a little hot under the collar because the Zenbook bears a striking resemblance to the MacBook Air. Although, going forward we can imagine a lot of Ultrabooks getting more Mac-like. Pegatron was in a particularly tight spot as it just landed the iPhone contract and it would have been very costly to lose the business at this early stage.
Pegatron has deals to build a number of other Windows-based systems, but no word on Apple strong-arming them over those. Do you think Apple will continue to lean on Chinese device manufacturers?

This is why I love Apple...oh wait.
this is fucking bullshit. i'm sick of apple manipulating everyone now
Apple remind me of a bitchy child that whines if it doesn't go their way.
This should be illegal honestly.
Is that in any way illegal for them to do? Could ASUS file something like an opposition like Blizzard did to Valve? Or is that not the way it works?

This is over the use of a production facility, not trademark.
I highly doubt it's illegal.
That said, it's quite a dickish move.
don't be an asshole, Apple
Apple's like that douchebag kid with the rich parents that nobody liked, who bitched and fucked everyone over if he couldn't have everything his way.
This is really pretty distasteful and horrible.
Pity, I'd take a Zenbook anytime over a MBA, like I took my Transformer over an iPad.
At first I thought it said the Pentagon, and wasn't actually too surprised that they might have manipulated the government. This is still bad regardless.

Capitalism at it's best.
I hate the word Ultrabook. It's a fucking laptop.
This should be illegal honestly.
It's definitely illegal, at least in Europe.
Intel had to pay many millions because they pressured retailers into not selling AMD's processors by giving better deals to those that didn't.
And Microsoft got sues loads by the US for monopolising.
This should be illegal honestly.
It is illegal.
Monopolizing or the act of trying to monopolize an industry is illegal in the U.S. and most of the world as well I'm sure.
This should be illegal honestly.
Freedom of business and market, fuck yeah!
I'm willing to bet that most of you would have done the same thing

Pretty sure this is different though. Surely you should be able to cancel a contract to help pressure a company into another contract.
Investors do it all the time.

My dad and brother have a Transformer. They are sexy.
What the hell? Apple does quite a lot to give me reason not to buy their stuff. I know this sounds like standard-anti-apple-stuff, but I really can't come up with anything to like them.
Research in Motion is more than willing to take that empty contract space, Apple.

But this is China, and the business market there is basically anarchy.
Though since Apple is a US company, they JUST MAYBE could be sued for it.

yeah I sue pegatron all the time it's quite fun
Crazy idea... lets make this profitable. Raise the court costs for major corporations to sue, not enough that they won't but enough that they will not be nearly so sue happy. Just by apples lawsuits alone we might be able to fix the economy.
is this shit even legal

If it was at that point we'd have real life Deus Ex.

Apple, fuck off you didn't even come up with the concept of a thin laptop.
I have an ASUS tablet and it seems to work far better than anything ever made by apple. Even better that i can charge my phone from it.
