Extreme lag on newer games, despite meeting requirements.

Just tried this with NFS: Shift and DiRT 2. Here's how it goes.
DiRT 2: Runs great for 2+ hours on maxed out settings, over 25-30 FPS. all of a sudden in the middle on one of the events it starts lagging like crazy at a constant 12 FPS. I turn down the settings, no change, 12 FPS. So I live with it for a bit, then it drops to a horrifying 3 FPS. There is nothing running in the background that wasn't before it starting lagging like crazy.
Then did a full comp restart.
Need For Speed Shi(f)t: Starts out at 12 FPS, I know right off the bat it was having the same problem as DiRT. Get halfway through the race and it drops to 1 FPS. Note this was after I had the DiRT problem and restarted the comp.
Only things running in the background are Steam, WMP and the Sidebar, all of which barely touch CPU usage.
Specs?
Might be overheating or it's time to clean your computer.
A laptop eh?
Check the power save settings, they might be limiting the performance.
Also, it's a HP Pavilion. so overheating is very likely.

No, :v: it's a modified pre-built desktop from 2007.
Alright tried it out again. Dirt started running almost as good as it did before, then NFS ran much better but after a few minutes was back to 1 FPS. I'll try and clean out the comp some time, even though I already did about a month ago.

How do you know, this really sounds like overheating to me.
Also your pc isnt really great so don't suspect dirt2 running on high.

Fortunately it is again, 20FPS at 1440x900, anistrophic x4 and all settings set to high, but NFS is still Need For Slow. Not much I can do about the heat besides clean it out. A new desk is too expensive, a few years ago my dad actually had to cut a hole on the side of his case for more airflow, (then ended up getting an HP like mine) I'm not about to go to those measurements.
check your voltages, if they are low you might be getting low fps

Really dumb question but where do I check for voltages?
speedfan, everest, even OCCT monitor them when you make a stability test!
