I find it stupid when trying to record Source games with Fraps, this is because with Fraps you can't choose the name of the video you want recorded. Also it has a LOT of slowdown compared to Source Recorder because THAT thing does not make slowdown because it records all the frames individually, don't forget about this lovely feature: You can record even if you have a crap video card and then "startmovie" it with very nice quality (would still cost you memory, GPU and FPS. But I still think it does cost you those things) Another alternative is WeGame, it's more for games that don't HAVE an .AVI converter built-into the engine. Say Poker Night at the Inventory, Telltale probably didn't make .AVI recorders into their games and surely their future games won't either. Little note: Even the Zombie Panic team use Fraps, when is someone gonna inform, convince or explain to them that Fraps makes slowdown and try to make them use Source Recorder instead? (Truly, according to Source Recorder is Delicious that Fraps is bad. Hope there will be a "WeGame is....." later)
It's all a preference.
Uh, you can change the name of the movie you're recording with FRAPs. You may not be able to do it when you hit the record button, but you can easily go in and re-name the file yourself. It's not hard work. Source Recorder is good if you're doing some heavy duty, special effects, recording. FRAPs is good if you want to just record something really quick, and have the machine to back it up.

But I know what you're saying: When recording short videos with like... 8 seconds, or 12 (but 12 seconds will need $400.000, not really)
I have XFire and use it's ingame video recorder. It doesn't lag me too much either.
I find it stupid that Fraps is still used in Source games, these morons have no idea that Fraps makes 100% slowdown compared to Source Recorder. Source Recorder only needs a demo with a name recorded and then startmovied with a "space" "avi" after the name, then select a Video Decompressor (Anything like DivX or XviD whatever, Uncompressed for full quality but high memory usage)
