Facebook admitted reading text messages belonging to smartphone users who downloaded the social-networking app and said that it was accessing the data as part of a trial to launch its own messaging service, The (London) Sunday Times reported. Other well-known companies accessing smartphone users' personal data - such as text messages - include photo-sharing site Flickr, dating site Badoo and Yahoo Messenger, the paper said. It claimed that some apps even allow companies to intercept phone calls - while others, such as YouTube, are capable of remotely accessing and operating users' smartphone cameras to take photographs or videos at any time. Security app My Remote Lock and the app Tennis Juggling Game were among smaller companies' apps that may intercept users' calls, the paper said. Emma Draper, of the Privacy International campaign group, said, "Your personal information is a precious commodity, and companies will go to great lengths to get their hands on as much of it as possible." More than 400,000 apps can be downloaded to Android phones, and more than 500,000 are available for iPhones - with all apps downloaded from Apple's App Store covered by the same terms and conditions policy. According to a YouGov poll for the newspaper, 70 per cent of smartphone users rarely or never read the terms and conditions policy when they download an app.

Source Wow that's a new low
Good thing I don't own a "smart"phone. What all does this? My girlfriend has an iphone so I feel like I should inform her.
I feel violated.
How is this shit even allowable?
Privacy? What's that you say?
snip
I didn't have the app installed anyway, its a slow bloated piece of shit that never works.
Fuck.
"70% of smartphone users rarely or never read the terms and conditions policy" 70%? That seems oddly low...
"70% of smartphone users rarely or never read the terms and conditions policy" 70%? That seems oddly low...
It's funny because of how depressingly true it is
Well this isn't exactly a surprise. In Decemeber 2011 Facebook went through a privacy audit by the Irish Data Protection Commissioner’s office which is the location of their European HQ and failed miserably, they're due for another audit in 6 months. They better get their shit *together fo'real! Otherwise they could face serious fines and bans, I think they've already been barred from a couple of things after this audit as a "consequence" but noting serious or major I should say.
i don't care as long as i can get my aunt's wacky kitten photos in real time!
Fucking hell, I like using facebook but this is bullshit
Over time, I get more and more glad that I don't use facebook.
How is this shit even allowable?
What do you mean "allowable"? When you enter into a contract with a corporation, you play by their rules.
What do you mean "allowable"? When you enter into a contract with a corporation, you play by their rules.
Yes but those "rules" have their own set of rules called laws and ethics.
How the fuck do they gain access to your phones?
I also hate how bloated and shitty the Facebook app is. I know on Android, the FB app uses more ram than all the Google apps combined.
What do you mean "allowable"? When you enter into a contract with a corporation, you play by their rules.
Agreeing to TOS is totally not the same as entering a contract.
i dont even use the fb app or the fb chat app, mostly because when i'm on the computer i don't need my phone making fucking noise while im using the chat ON MY COMPUTER and then sometimes it'll get all of the messages i got throughout the day on the app all at once, aaaaaaaa force stop that shit every day.
"70% of smartphone users rarely or never read the terms and conditions policy" 70%? That seems oddly low...
Problem is, who really does read the huge fucking things? Don't get me wrong, it can save you from a load of shit, but it would take so goddamn long to read that you wouldn't really be interested in using the app anymore.
Oh that's fucking lovely
What do you mean "allowable"? When you enter into a contract with a corporation, you play by their rules.
Not in the EU, it's much more heavily regulated, to the benefit of the consumer here, so chances are that what FB's doing is not legal here. Companies can't pass off t&c as full fledged legal contracts.
facebook app is shit anyway, i had to reinstall it almost every day because i'd end up on a page where the back button would disapear or it'd crash and freeze. facebook through safari on my iphone is much better and easier
Good thing I don't own a "smart"phone.
I don't see what you meant by quoting the word 'smart'. I can see you doing that if it was called a SecurePhone...
really not that surprising. didn't zuckerberg at one point say that basically facebook and the changes that happen to it over time are specifically targeted at eroding people's inhibitions regarding how much information about themselves they put online, so that eventually nobody has privacy? plus he stated that he believes that privacy is an outdated idea.
How about a law that requires sold applications to have a summarized version of the TOS that would be like 10 sentences long at max. And in that, they have to outline which data it will access, what the producer of the software intends to do with it and if they have any warranty for their services. Now that would be nice. Maybe people would actually read that.
Facebook makes people look transparent because fools put everything that happens in their lives in Facebook, which isn't good. I also hate Facebook because I get 500+ e-mails a week from them because the random people my family forced me to "befriend" wouldn't shut the fuck up.
Awesome in a way. Now people realize how intruding Facebook is.
