The Syrian army has scored "major victories" against rebels and now holds "the balance of power" in the conflict, President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly told a Lebanese TV station.
Mr Assad is also quoted as saying Syria has received the first shipment of an advanced Russian air defence system.
Russia vowed to go ahead with sending S-300 missiles earlier this week.
Meanwhile, the main opposition outside Syria said it would not take part in peace talks while massacres continued.
Speaking in Istanbul where the Syrian National Coalition is meeting, its interim head, George Sabra, said that talk of diplomatic conferences was farcical while Syrian government forces backed by the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah were carrying out heinous crimes.
President Assad's interview with Hezbollah-linked Al Manar TV is set to be broadcast later on Thursday.
In excerpts from the interview published by Lebanon's pro-Syrian Al Akhbar newspaper, Mr Assad is quoted as saying: "The Syrian army has scored major victories against armed rebels on the ground and the balance of power is now with the Syrian army."
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem made similar comments on Wednesday, telling Lebanese media: "Our armed forces have regained the momentum.''
Mr Assad also admits in the interview with Al Manar that Syria and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement are co-operating, or "on the same axis".
"Hezbollah fighters are deployed along the Lebanese-Syrian borders but the operations are conducted by the Syrian army until the "terrorist" groups are crushed", he is quoted as saying.
Mr Assad condemns backing for the rebels from Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, claiming there are now 100,000 foreign fighters on Syrian soil.

I just stopped caring, both sides are gonna fuck the Syrians over.
We should not fiddle with civil wars, sadly we're giving the rebels weapons like they did in Afghanistan. It's like history keeps repeating itself and no one cares.
fun fact, the syrian military has ordered soldiers to go into neighborhoods thought to house families of opposition members, round up the women and girls, gang-rape them and kill them in order to terrorize opposition forces and their families into surrendering or fleeing the country.
but you people will still cheer when assad makes a victory because facepunch is full of statist neckbeard pussies who are scared of 'brown people being out of control'

well it's not exactly what he said but here's a timeline of the latest massacre in banias 3 weeks ago, in which an estimated 800 people were executed by assad's forces:

Can that source be trusted? The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the death toll was 1/8th of that. Nonetheless, its a massacre and it doesn't really back up anything he said.

And the rebels kill and behead people who support Assad, even innocent government workers like Post Office employees. Your point?

There's no denying Assad is an asshole. You're just naive if you think the rebels are better and don't do shit like that. Hell even our biased medias give us proof of their crimes every once in a while.

I still hate Assad but let's stop this habit of playing down the threat the rebels pose. They were able to get hands on, and use fucking sarin gas on their own people just for political reasons (framing Assad). I don't care what you say about them not being the majority of the ones representing the rebels, whoever has these chemical weapons are clearly a major player among the rebels.
Honestly I just can't choose a side properly.
Assad is a genocidal maniac, but there are factions within the rebels that are just as dangerous, if not moreso.
It's horrible to say this but I just have to sit back and watch this play out. We (NATO/EU/The West in General) shouldn't be arming anyone on any side.

weren't these reports inconsistent with the range and location, or am I thinking of a different incident? BM did a thing on it:

Also didn't Hezbollah just switch sides and join Assad recently? I remember seeing a thread about it on here month ago or so. I'd be shakin in my boots if Hezbollah struck some sort of deal with Assad and got their hands on Sarin.

It's only recently they've been pitching in with the actual fighting.
Fuck choosing sides. I'm out of here. I'll be back in a decade to dig through the ashes.
I'd almost rather the government regain control over the rebels, honestly. At least they're one recognizable group, not a bunch of loosely tied insurgent groups. Considering Syria seems in a bad spot either way, at least its easier to clean up a group that has a face.

I'm not a fan of either side but Hezbollah really doesn't need to get involved with this, it'll only strengthen their organization and make life even harder in the region.
Has Israel done anything whatsoever in response to the first shipments arriving? IIRC they threatened to intervene and attack any S-300s and supplies being sent to Syria?

We're going to have to wait and find out.
Oh fuck, out of curiousity I clicked a video ( On youtube ) about that recent Baya massacre. Truly fucked up shit; some guy was filming like 50 dead children lying in a row on the pavement, all stabbed/shot in the head.
Assad is a genocidal maniac
no he fucking isn't
Seems like people forgot all the shit he did the first time the rebels also did something. I think some people just have atrocity ADD.
no he fucking isn't
Well I would say 'prove it' but then I realized the burder of proof is on me and I haven't really kept up with the situation to know what Assad has done so there.
In other news, I'm going back to playing Conflict: MEPS to prepare for the inevitable Happening.
Seems like people forgot all the shit he did the first time the rebels also did something. I think some people just have atrocity ADD.
I know he did shit, but he's still more trusted than some of the rebel factions fighting for power.
I know he did shit, but he's still more trusted than some of the rebel factions fighting for power.
Assad can he held responsible(Not that they care), rebel factions can't since they're so disorganized and anything they did would probably be blamed on the government anyways.

yep, just because it would be a little easier to clean everything up, you want the person that started it all by killing protesters to win? Even if Assad did win, it would be JUST like Iraq, daily suicide bombings, car bombing, and shootings. I'm not completely taking the rebels side, but lets hope the rebels that aren't extremist fanatics do not take control and cause a second conflict.

Well doesn't sound fun at all.
Yeah I was a pretty big rebel supporter for the longest while but after the UN report I almost think SAA
