I'm getting sick of all the problems and bullshit with windows (7). Should I install Ubuntu or OS X on my PC (yes, my HW is compatible with OS X).
What I mainly do on my PC:
- Play TF2
- Play TF2
- Play TF2
- Watch movies and TV shows
- Listen to music
- Some light photoshopping
Neither of the OS's are really designed for gaming, so I'm kinda unsure which one I should choose. It's gonna require some work to get TF2 running on Ubuntu, but I've heard that it runs poorly on OS X.
Thoughts? Should I just test both of them?
I'd say OS X just because it has support from a very large and trusted company.
I do say I hate to see someone abandon Windows, though.
Which version of Windows do you have? If its Vista, just upgrade to 7. Neither OS X or Ubuntu were designed for gaming. At all.
Also, wine and steam are not good friends.
I'm not a OS X fan, but If you want to play tf2, OS X is obivously better since it has native support of it. If it wasn't for tf2, i'd have told you to use ubuntu!

OsX?
Huh! I should call Windows WiN 7
OS X is the better of the two. Though you could choose a decent Linux distro.
if you plan on playing TF2 and most valve games easily, OS X is your best bet
Considering it says you're on xp i'd say upgrade to 7 before you choose OSX or Ubuntu. But if you're dead set on picking one of those two I'd say Ubuntu is better overall, but if TF2 is a major point you're better off with OSX.
get off xp and move to 7.
seriously, companies are starting to abandon xp due to the fact that it is getting to the end of its support life (again)
Go with OS X for gaming on Steam.
I'm waiting until XP's life reaches it's end of updates so I can finally update my XP Disc with the final Update Rollup and call it good. :3
I'm not upgrading to 7 until I can afford it
WHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?
Why not just download and install the 7989 build of Windows 8? It's perfectly stable for me. Games and apps run flawlessly, even if it looks a bit rough around the edges, it's coming along nicely. :3
Windows XP is stable for what I do, I'll wait.
If you're sick of problems I think you should stick with OS X, linux can be problem heaven for people who don't know how to properly use it.

But it's very expensive just to get rid of a few problems.

:eng101:
OS X would be a better choice over Linux. Even going the Hackintosh route would fair better.
I don't know how well gaming would go on a Hackintosh, but probably better under wine. That being said, Ubuntu is awesome-tastic, but sadly windows is your best bet. Fortunately big hard drives are easy to come by, and you might be able to dual or even triple boot.
It appears from other posts that OP is on 7. Remember, browser data is broken for OPs (why that happens is beyond me).
If you'd tell us what the problems are, we could try and help you with that.
Linux might be worth it if you give it a shot. Then again, why don't you just dualboot and have the best of both worlds? That's what I do.
[editline]22nd June 2011[/editline]
Though for Steam gaming and Photoshop and Media, I will admit that OSX would be better than Ubuntu.

If you look around on the internet you can buy the Windows 7 key alone for less than $20
All you have to do then is grab the iso from Microsoft's site
Or, if your in a pinch, get a windows activator for now, and buy the key once you can afford it.
If your XP is fucking up that much, a reinstall might be in order, I have XP running perfectly stable on my server.
[editline]22nd June 2011[/editline]
But yeah, I would have chosen a better distro to be honest, Ubuntu might look the most complete, but it really isn't.

Yeah, Mint 11 is far more complete than Ubuntu. Less annoying too. :P
OS X will require more dicking about to keep your PC running, Ubuntu will require more dicking about since Ubuntu doesn't have Photoshop or native Steam. Take your pic.

What this guy said.
Seriously, why would you want either?
OSX :
- If you're pirating it, you're entering a world of "Oh, crap, another update, I hope I'll still be able to use my machine"
- If you're buying it, why not buy Win7?
Ubuntu :
- Good luck gaming on Linux
- I don't want to reiterate my feelings about Ubuntu, but why Ubuntu anyway?
Overall :
- Why switch away from XP? If all you play is TF2, then XP is as good as you'll get, it uses less resources than any alternative that can play TF2.
Seriously dude, I don't want to burst your bubble, but WTF are you doing?
Though on the subject of gaming apparently the next version of OS X which is out next month has a completely rewritten OpenGL implementation, so gaming under OS X might not be as bad in Lion (but who knows tbfh)
I've been using Win7 since the beta.

Anyways, I'm not necessarily moving completely away from Windows, but I just want to try another OS and leave Windows for a while. Might try the Win7 + OS X dual boot..

Just wanna get away from all the crap and problems with Windows for a while. I've heard that many people have managed to get better game performance on Linux than on Windows. Obviously I won't just erase the Win HDD in case everything fucks up, just wanna try to use another OS for a while.
The OP might have been a bit misleading as I wrote it just after I had some major problems with Windows. :P

What about wineskin and crossover games?
Get Ubuntu and just install wine then download steam and it'll work the same as in windows. Just be sure to put the Ubuntu ui to classic as from what I've experienced steam doesn't like the new Ubuntu ui very much.

Gimp comes preinstalled. And once you have wine installed (you need for steam anyway) in Ubuntu you can just install Photoshop the same way you do in Windows.
yeah, steam really, really doesn't like wine, the same for the source engine to my experience.
I haven't had to many issues.
