So I aquired a free HP Proliant ML530 G2 server, right now i've got 5 drives in it totaling out at 500 gigs with 8gb of ram and I'm kinda at a loss on what i should use it for besides storage of my music/movies. Edit* here are some processor specs on it Processors: Intel Xeon 2.4ghz (x2 hyperthreaded)(currently running at 8 degrees celcius in my garage :D)
folding@home, also porno storage.
it makes you feel like a better person
I don't like the idea of allowing others access to my computer, in any way, shape, or form.
I don't like the idea of allowing others access to my computer, in any way, shape, or form.
They just give your computer protein folding calculations to do, there is nothing seedy going on at all. [editline]13th December 2011[/editline] Its either that or help the LHC process collision data.
ESXi install and run VM's of anything you want...
Sell it on ebay as gaymen computer 4CPUs 9.6GHZ 8GB RAM MEMORY
Make a FP server for some game.
I don't like the idea of allowing others access to my computer, in any way, shape, or form.
That's kinda the point of a server. Anyway, Folding at home is a very legit service that's been around for a while. Basically your server will run data crunching for things like gene research, SETI data, or even LHC data. Its cool because you can track how much you have helped each organization. Its a feel good thing as stated above. Edit: Also you don't have to allow anyone access for it. Its 100% automated with the amount of data these projects have.
Processors: Intel Xeon 2.4ghz (four of them)(currently running at 8 degrees celcius in my garage
Your server doesn't have four CPUs, it has two with hyper threading. You basically have two CPUs with each of their processing power split between two virtual CPUs. Netburst based Xeon processors aren't really good for anything. They're grossly inefficient, use huge amounts of power (the ones in that server pull 77W each pretty much 24/7) and produce tons of heat. With all of those drives, RAM and CPUs, that thing probably uses 400W or more 24/7. Due to the horrible inefficiency of netburst CPUs, they wouldn't be good for any type of game server, or distributed computing project. About the only thing it would be good for is running some large database for some corporation. I would just pull the drives and the RAID controller (if it's a PCI-X card) and send the rest to the recycler, then build a far more useful and efficient machine.
Take it to a park, attach it to one side of a seesaw and sit on the other side, then maybe put it on a swing and push it for a while followed by a nice picnic. Or you could host a minecraft/gmod/web server.
Or you could host a minecraft/gmod/web server.
I just said Netburst CPUs are terrible for all three of those. Minecraft would utterly destroy that server with almost no real load, and Gmod wouldn't be far behind.
Thanks for the advice.
I don't like the idea of allowing others access to my computer, in any way, shape, or form.
where did you get this ProLiant from [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] holy shit definitely virtualise
where did you get this ProLiant from [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] holy shit definitely virtualise
sources that of which cannot be named, it was not stolen but it was retrieved in a company closure. it was broken so they were going to throw it away when a friend of mine(who was their I.T.) grabbed it for me. I went and worked on the ram a little bit I got it running
