The New Mexico landfill or "Atari Dump" where the game console maker buried its mistakes — the biggest being the game E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial — will be dug up by game developer Fuel Industries, which hopes to make a documentary about the project.
I was hoping it was going to be funded by James Rolfe.
They should leave a small portion with an airtight bag with an Atari in it, So it could be a Doom 3 moment in the future.

When the aliens come out of the portal thing.
I though that the pit's existence was constantly denied by Atari themselves.
Well, this is going to make the AVGN movie awkward.

Would you admit dumping your product because you couldn't sell it?
Well, this is going to make the AVGN movie awkward.
How?
How?
Well, the plot is that he's going to go dig up the ET landfill, and then the government thinks he's looking for aliens or something, and it goes from there.
The whole idea is that the landfill is legendary, if it's already been dug up...
How?
The plot has to do with trying to find and dig up the plot.

Personally, I'm not gonna care and I hope people don't get distracted by that to the point where it impacts the quality of the film.

it's not like people hate movies just because they're factually inconceivable.
When the first drill breaks through the dusty cement, a black mist will pour from the opening, saying ",After a thousand years of imprisonment, I see the wretched light once more," then dissipating into the desert air. Weeks later, the Videogame Crash of 2013 will occur.

I was thinking more like Rita from Power Rangers pops out of a capsule in the landfill.

She has been dead for 7 years.
My dad still has a copy

We need five teenagers with ATTITUDE!
There's just some dark parts of history that should never be uncovered. What they are doing here will doom us all!
If it was dumped for a tax write-off, isn't there legal red tape that says people can't poke at it?

The voice actor is still kickin' though.
She was at comicpalooza last week.

Considering the state of the video game industry, I think that could be a welcomed event.
I mean, I imagine it would kill a lot of nice developers, but goddamn, it sure as hell would put an end to the idea of the AAA title. Games would be more indie, as people who make games for their love of games and not for the money. It'd be bittersweet, but it could be better in the long term.
Either that, or a pseudo crash that would probably put an end to consoles. Nobody would want to fuck with physical copies, meaning digital copies would reign, which would lead to the death of publishers...well, maybe. Some might sit tight with their own cloud.
Finding a huge cache of ancient games has always been my retro wetdream, even if it's E.T

It'll never happen though, consumers nowadays are too stupid to make the same informed choices that caused the first crash.
The publishers learned that if you can assault the consumer base with an endless stream of hype, disinfo, and flashy trailers, you can market ANYTHING to them and they will buy it.
It's also the consumer's fault, they'll buy whatever they're told to, and in the case of parents, whatever their spoiled little shits demand to be bought for them.
At least you can still play all the games from before these dark ages thanks to the internet and those swashbuckling archivists of the seas, but not for much longer, if EA's [sp]temporary[/sp] murder of Underground Gamer over a few downloads of a sports title from 19-FUCKING-98 is any indication.

Personally I wouldn't want to see the end of physical copies as both digital distribution and physical copies have their benefits. One of the reasons I prefer a physical copy is that it means I can install a game straight from the disk in 15-20 minutes instead of having to wait 3 hours for Steam to download the files as was my experience with installing Skyrim.

Isn't the excavation on the same day as the Xbox One next reveal?

Ah, so it wasn't Rita that died, it was Bandora.

A world with only indie games is a world in which I would never want to live

The question being, what will get buried to end that theoretical crash, so that that dark spirit is once again imprisoned? What would become the avatar of the current shitshow?
