• Nvidia to ATI - Am I right?

Hey (again) The time has come again for me to upgrade my graphics. I have recently upgraded my motherboard, cpu and ram so now I want to swap my graphics card for something a little heavier whilst it still has second hand value. My Specs: CPU : AMD Phenom II 955BE MB: MSI 790FX GD70 RAM : Corsair XMS3 4GB 1333 PSU : Coolermaster RealPower M620 and finaly GFX : XFX GTX 260 (216) Obviously my new mobo and cpu combo makes a pretty solid AMD set up and gives me the space for up to 4 ATI cards at 16X. Here's my options... A : Swap GTX 260 for a HD 5850 (giving me the opportunity to go crossfire in the future) B : Swap motherboard for AM3 SLI and get the new GTX 460 (giving me the opportunity to go SLI in the future) UPDATE Well I think I'm going to stick with nividia for now, I just know them better and I don't want to lose my Phys-X. So it'll probably be the 1GB EVGA GTX 460, seems a high hitter and low price. Was thinking of swapping my motherboard out for the Asus M4N98TD EVO. Its not a very well known board but it has everything I want, supports DDR3 1333 ram nicely with no OC, a 140W CPU, takes 2 16X nvidia cards in SLI. Until I change my mind of course ¬_¬
5850, XFX, ASUS. There's no point in going GTX 260 SLI and buying a new motherboard because you'll end up with less performance and the problems that come with multiple GPUs. The Black edition is just a factory overclocked card, if you plan on trying to achieve fairly high overclocks (1GHz core), you could buy it as those cards are binned higher.

Cheers for the 5850 recommendations I'm new to this ATI stuff, but what about the GTX 460? Is that worth swapping my motherboard for? I second the 5850. DX11 y'all

460 is great for performance/price and unless you are playing at higher than 1920x1080 resolutions you dont need much more.
Switching from Nvidia to ATI was the biggest mistake I made. They haven't even released proper drivers for their card as the mouse is now 6 times the size it was before. In a few months I'm headed back to Nvidia to get a GTX 460.

The reason why I'm asking here is because I've got a pretty strong AMD + ATI set up, so really for a future proof PC with an nvidia card I'm going to have to make some big changes. If I don't then I'll feel like my motherboard's going to waste... Ideally I want an X58 mobo that can take both sides very well, but that isn’t going to happen for a long time...
I have it the other way around then I guess... I have an ati 4600 and they release drivers for my card every month and it preforms very well for being an outdated crapcard.

If you really look at it, you're spending more money on changing the platform. You'll spend an extra $100 on the board, which takes away from the card. I suggest keeping with your platform, go with the 5850 or the 5870. Afterall, whats thats the difference. Sure the 5850 might not be as strong as the 460. Regardless, its a very fast and stable card. I say go with the 5850 and crossfire it later. Or go with the 5770 and crossfire it. Also, isn't there a workaround for ATi GPUS and PhysX?

But it's very tricky and can throw up some big driver issues. The GTX 460 compares more with the 5830 too so I've heard. The 5850 has a slight edge but not realy worth the extra £30-£40. As far as swapping the platform out, I can probably get £80 - £100 for my current motherboard which will almost pay for the Asus. Was planning on doing the same with the GTX 260, thats worth around £110.
I second the 5850. DX11 y'all
DX11 is nothing special.
DX11 is nothing special.
Yeah tesselation is nothing special.
Both the 5850 and the 460 will have DX11 so I'll be getting it either way.
DX11 is nothing special.
4xx series has it aswell
I'm holding off on upgrading and waiting for the next "amazing" Direct X that's going to break the mold and blow the mind. Until I see something truly astounding, I'm going to stick with my 8800GTS.

No you are wrong ATI to Nvidia.
I think Nvidia to ATI. Currently I have a 4890 and I can run most games easy. Physx isn't really in many games yet.
Very true. PhysX isnt that popular, but the games it is in are the games I realy enjoy. If the 5850 was say £20 or £30 cheaper then I'd buy it without thinking, it's just I know that as far as boom for buck goes the GTX 460 is the better card at the moment. I mean the 1GB EVGA SC is the hardest hitting version and costs only £180!
Mafia II.
