• Monitoring flatmates internet usage

I live in a flat with a bunch of other people and I recently got the internet set-up so we're all online now. My problem is that there's a cap on the amount of bandwidth you can use a month, and I'm afraid my bandwidth-unaware flatmates are going to go nuts with downloads and exceed the limit. I was wondering is there any way I can monitor how much bandwidth each computer is using? I'm plugged directly into the router via ethernet whereas they're all connected via wireless if that helps. I just want to see what kind of bandwidth each flatmate is using so at the end of the month, if we get a massive bill, I can easily see who it is that's caused it. Cheers
I have a sensible suggestion: talk to them.
when you reach your data limit wouldnt it throttle it instead of charging you more? might just be best to alert your flat mates to the data limit. if you can check online, just tell them when your running low and remind them to not go on youtube/download stuff
3 Options come to mind: Use a router with DD-WRT Installed, It has bandwidth monitoring. - Not sure about per-user but I am sure scripts or addons exist. Force them onto wired and put a cheap HUB In there, Hubs spew all traffic to all ports, this then allows you to watch any traffic going through the hub with software such as WireShark. Another solution, get your own internet connection.
Me and my room-mate have a "day" limit we set for each other so we have broadband till the end of the month, but if we're behind on our quota we download shit. But yeah, talk to them.
