Remember that guy who tried to buy the upcoming Fallout 4 computer game with bottle caps?
We all had a good chuckle at his expense, didn’t we?
Well the only person laughing now is Seth (the cooky guy who originally sent in the bottle caps), because he’s getting a copy of the highly anticipated game for free.
Seth hit headlines last week after posting roughly 2,240 bottles caps (the currency used in the game) to Bethesda, who developed Fallout 4, in the hopes of getting a copy.
Rather than laugh at Seth like the rest of us, Bethesda’s global community lead Matt Grandstaff admired Seth’s gusto and agreed to send him a copy of the game when it is released.
In a post to Imgur Seth said: ‘[Matt] told me since I was the first person to do this, I would be receiving a copy of the game this November.’
We assume this was a one-off gift, and Bethesda won’t be giving away games to everyone who has an excess of bottle caps lying around.
Here’s the hilarious letter Seth sent in along with his thousands of bottle caps.

I read somewhere the amount of bottle caps was worth quite a lot of money. Can't recall the amount, but it was somewhere in the hundreds.
Cool that Bethesda did that, when I first saw the image of him doing this, I had a feeling Bethesda would give him the game for the effort of sending that many bottle caps to 'em.
holy moly that's worth almost a couple dozen of those gold Legion coins
If he got all of those caps from bottles he bought, that's probably several hundred dollars worth of drinks.

If you worked in a bar or cafe it might be relatively easy to do, assuming the management isn't strict about getting them back.
They should see if they can get someone to make a piece of Fallout related art with it, sell the thing on Ebay, take the money for the game and then donate the rest to charity.
2,240 bottles caps is about $112 if sold per nickle (to recycle center). Most places will buy for a dime so $224. (Granted they wont count them; just weigh them)
:/ bet he spent more money shipping the bottle caps than the game is actually worth.

if he drank a coca cola or a beer a day for the 7.5 years he claims he would have 2700 bottlecaps, so it is entirely reasonable he did this himself

That's like two and a half drink

still a hell of a story, plus he'll probably get some extra bits for being the special guy.
Thousands of people are now going to send Bethesda bottlecaps....

my roommate built a bar for our old townhouse, had 'WAR NEVER CHANGES' written in red caps across the top, with a framing of tons of white/other caps laid out neatly around it, and plexiglass over the top. He ended up making this huge laser-cut 'vault ###' emblem for the front, with our address for the number.
he's got a LOT of caps still tucked away somewhere
guy got ripped off, a whole bundle of prewar money is worth like 10 caps
I never understood that. It's currency that's been obsolete for 200 years.
Shit, bottle caps are actually worth money to Recycling Centers? We don't count ours anymore, we just throw them away and we end up with at least 100+ caps from beers at least once a week.. (AT WORK) Gonna start taking that shit now. Its not stealing since they're thrown away anyways.
I sort of expected this guy to manage to get a copy, some real dedication and gall sending all that.
He said it cost $25 to ship them.

I guess the NCR still uses alongside the NCR dollar?
It's not like using bottlecaps in the first place makes much sense.

Toilet paper.
After reading this, I had an incredibly disturbing vision of a copycat, only it involved sending Hearts to Konami to pre order a new Castlevania game............
With regards to the actual topic: good for him. And good on Bethesda for accepting and having a good attitude towrds it.
the guy that opened the boxes complained on twitter that his office smelled like beer

I actually did the math using the base value of a stack of pre-war bills as found in the GECK and came up with a value in 2077 US Dollars of about 500,000.
Now, inflation ran rampant in the 2050s and 2060s in the Fallout universe, so taking that into account, the according-to-the-game value of that stack of caps is about 3 or 4 thousand dollars.

Here's the story behind bottle caps:
In New California, the relative scarcity of bottle caps made them a perfect currency for Hub merchants to adopt in the 22nd century, leading to the nickname "Hubbucks" and "Hubscript." Backed by the value of water, the Hub merchants supported bottle caps because the technology to manufacture them and paint their surfaces had been mostly lost in the Great War, which limited any counterfeiting efforts. Secondly, there are a limited number of bottle caps, which preserve their value against inflation to some degree. For similar reasons the East Coast merchants also recognize bottle caps as a currency, although who backs them and guarantees their value is unknown.
The west coast used NCR dollars almost exclusively for a while, and bottlecaps mostly disappeared (Fallout 2), but then the NCR's gold reserves (which backed the NCR Dollar's value) got destroyed in the Brotherhood-NCR war, and bottlecaps made a resurgence alongside the near worthless NCR dollar.

Didn't stop me from collecting every bit I saw and leaving it in a huge pile in my house

He probably did it because it's a fun thing to do rather than to save money.

This is how Facepunch reacts to fun.
Assuming all of those bottle caps were steel, if you were sell that steel at a current price of 100 dollars per ton, and all of those bottle caps weigh .08 ounces, he technically bought the game for $8.96. Damn.
Assuming the same except with nickel instead, at the current price of $5.80 dollars per pound, he technically bought the game for $1039.36. Holy fuck that's way over price.
Assuming the same except with Aluminum, at the current price of $0.75 dollars per pound, he technically bought the game for $134.40. Still way over price.

Screw the value in dollars, he could have bought a laser rifle with that many caps!
Screw the value in dollars, he could have bought a laser rifle with that many caps!
caps > laser rifle > cash > even more caps > continue until trillionaire
2,240 caps is worth like $1000 on the west coast, or $250 on the east coast.
