A form of yeast that was genetically engineered to produce various cannabinoids.
- - -
In August, researchers announced they had genetically engineered yeast to produce the powerful painkiller hydrocodone. Now comes the perhaps inevitable sequel: Scientists have created yeasts that can make important constituents of marijuana, including the main psychoactive compound, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.
Synthetic versions of THC are available in pill form under brand names like Marinol and Cesamet; they are generally used to treat nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite caused by H.I.V. infection or cancer chemotherapy. Genetically modified yeast could make THC in a cheaper and more streamlined way than traditional chemical synthesis.
Using yeast could also shed light on the clinical usefulness of cannabis-derived compounds. Marijuana is increasingly embraced as medicine, yet there is limited evidence that it is effective against many of the conditions for which it is prescribed. Researchers hoping to separate fact from wishful thinking will need much better access to marijuana’s unique constituents. Modified yeast may provide them.
Say hello to 2nd gen drugs... plenty of other drugs will be engineered this way.

Gah, made a typo on the thread title. If a mod could fix it, that'd be great!
This is pretty magnificent
Yeasts, eh? D'you think they could be grown on bread, or is that just for moulds like penicillin?
Now my baked goods can double down on THC. CANNAbutter/oil mixed with thc yeast. Amazing.

In Soviet Future, Bread Bakes YOU!
I wonder if it's possible to make an implant that generates THC with yeast and, upon activation, releases it directly into your blood stream

Well, there´s also the potential of beer with THC...

That's always been a reality, i guess it's just easier now

I've heard of that, but isn't it supposedly a little bit more dangerous? Or are there people in the audience who have been drunk and smoked cannabis who can confirm negligible negative effects from having the two chems in their bloodstream?

It's called getting crossfaded when smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. It's a common thing to do.

I have not ever had a bad reaction to being "Krunk". I don't drink excessively either so theres that.

I prefer the terminology "drigh" because in implies I am perhaps sober.
Wouldn't mind turning some yeast into hydrocodone either :v:
I'm glad I got this insight into the matter. Either way, I'm guessing the safety of "weed beer" would depend on the potency of the THC present in the resultant potion.

why would high THC be more dangerous exactly?
why would high THC be more dangerous exactly?
not dangerous, just unpleasant.
not dangerous, just unpleasant.
he said "safety"
And either way, the kind of thing where you should avoid operating heavy machinery. Though both booze and weed are bound to be things that you shouldn't have before operating anything.
why would high THC be more dangerous exactly?
Because the ld50 (lethal dose, half the time) of thc is very possible to reach
Keep marijuana illegal because of the culture... legalize and regulate THC

Pretty sure 2nd gen drugs were lab synthesized like amphetamines and lsd, this is like much further
Anyway if the laws don't change and this gets out suddenly obtaining microbrewing equipment is going to get a lot harder, just like how certain large sized lab equipment is regulated under the drug laws
[editline]16th September 2015[/editline]
They should also engineer in those other molecules that weed has that regulates the intake
Isn't this what the guy on Mr. Robot was making?
Because the ld50 (lethal dose, half the time) of thc is very possible to reach
the lethal divided by active dose is about 1000 according to wikipedia, which means "weed beer" doesn't really pose a safety threat if taken in normal amounts. to OD on THC you'd basically have to take it in pill form, even then, it's still much safer than caffeine or other drugs sold in pills.
Keep marijuana illegal because of the culture... legalize and regulate THC
Only if drinking culture dies too
I've heard of that, but isn't it supposedly a little bit more dangerous? Or are there people in the audience who have been drunk and smoked cannabis who can confirm negligible negative effects from having the two chems in their bloodstream?
I do this every night and I can confirm you don't want to smoke heavily when you're super drunk, that's all. You'll get lightheaded/the spins but cigarettes will do that when you're drunk too
Imagine a breed of Yeast that would produce LSD while being able to harmlessly dwell in someone's gut, and "infecting" somebody with it. They would be tripping balls nonstop. Man that's spooky.
Keep marijuana illegal because of the culture... legalize and regulate THC
Where's that Onion article about how the only reason pot is still illegal is to spite stoners.
Imagine a breed of Yeast that would produce LSD while being able to harmlessly dwell in someone's gut, and "infecting" somebody with it. They would be tripping balls nonstop. Man that's spooky.
You would develop a tolerance to it very quickly. It would be awesome for a day or so, but unless the microbes produce insane amounts of the stuff, you would cease to feel it after a few days of constant dosing. Source: I've done a lot of LSD. To even be able to slightly feel a trip the day after tripping, you need to at least double the dosage, probably even triple it if you actually want to feel it.
So actually that would be a good thing for the anti-drug advocates. It would make you effectively immune to lsd.
I'd rather still consume the plant form via a non-combustion method. By far the most practically useful bits are the CBD compounds of which there are many varied concentrations and ingredients i.e the stuff that stops seizures.
It's like having concentrated caffeine pills as opposed to tea and coffee.
This is still cool as hell though.

basically ergot fungus (except its not really lsd)
