If you can recall the songs that got you hooked and the first few songs you heard when you looked them up that you liked just as much. it would be cool if you could mention them and post them in media tags, maybe you might get someone else to go through the same experience you had with the band.
Interpol: I've had their song "untitled" forever (from listening to one of those internet radio sites where you find new songs), probably since it came out. Up until now it's been all i've needed of the band. But when browsing youtube for blur videos I came across a video for the song barricade and was hooked on the perfect vocals and ethereal instrumentals (like if a misfit indie early 20-something jesus formed an avant-garde alternative band and found his drummer from a jazz/rock bar in the depths of hell where all the crazy cool people chill). The thing i like the most about this band are the really cryptic lyrics that almost always give off subtones of love, plus the instrumentals can be really provocative sometimes.

Can: I discovered this band through the something awful thread about radiohead. Apparently can is a main source of inspiration to this most wonderful and varied band. It actually really shows in just about everything, even the vocals. At times you can tell where thom yorke got some of his inspiration for his aloof, dissonant, desperate and beautiful vocals. The first song i heard was Oh Yeah off their so called greatest album in comparison to the song "these are my twisted words" by yes again radiohead. it didn't captivate me at first until i heard the song "the theif". The link was to a radiohead cover but i chose to listen to the original Can version first. After that i was hooked. I proceeded to sample and spend all of my credit on itunes downloading good songs (thank god for minute thirty second samples). The thing i found with can though is you have to slog through a bunch of songs you might not like to get to the real gems. But through more listening it may grow on the listener (i'm still waiting for this) and all material may become gold no matter how mundane, i know that's happened to me with many bands.

One i've known about for a while and have listened to but not bought many songs (one song to be exact) from is Tomahawk. The only song i have by them is Capt Midnight which i heard when i beat the game The Darkness. after beating it for the second time I bought the song and listened to it a lot. I love it when i hear a song for the first time or again but in the context of a movie or game and it adds a second perspective to the song you never saw before. In this case the game ends in a serene and pleasant "dream" [sp]the main character is given by the powers that be one last moment with his dead girlfriend, the scene ends with her whispering "wake up jackie, wake up..."[/sp] and the first words of the song are "wake up". even if it's not in the context of the song from what the lyrics mean (and i dunno with this song im shit interpreting lyrics) it's always a nice twist. Recently also happened to me with the movie "the prestige" and the credits song "analyse". Since i got more credit on my itunes i'm looking into their library right now. The reason why i like this song so much besides the context i was given when i first heard it is the parallel between the calm and sinisterly beautiful vocals and the all out near scream the frontman gives. personally i think songs with a sort of repressed craziness which surfaces fully sometimes comes out more hardcore than those where the vocalist is screaming the whole time (another radiohead reference but the song climbing up the walls is the epitome of this. it's about this stalker and his thoughts of obsession. thom captures the voice perfect as this insecure little person who's slipped over the edge. what do you think is more scary, some big raving buffoon coming straight at you? or someone who waits, hides and plans the fuck out of your demise?). everything in life can't be done to excess, even pure human emotion, it can't be taken seriously unless there's PCP meth steroids coke booze or a combo of those and major anger issues involved, which i guess is what vocalists in death metal and post hardcore bands must be on and smoking (no hate lol, i love you post hardcore and death metal guys :unsmith:)
