http://gizmodo.com/5475005/steve-jobs-flash-video-would-make-the-ipad-battery-life-15-hours
According to Steve Jobs, running Flash video on the iPad would cut its battery life from 10 hours to a measly 1.5. At least, that was his pitch to Wall Street Journal execs recently. But could it possibly be true? Well, yes and no. Jobs is picking and choosing here between hypothetical versions of Flash. If the iPad version of Flash were to have hardware acceleration, which Flash 10.1 offered up for desktops (though not OS X), that wouldn't be remotely the case. If Flash on the iPad were to support hardware video decoding where available, it wouldn't require nearly as much CPU. You'd lose battery life, sure, the same way you lose battery life watching any type of video on any system, but nothing near as dramatic as 85%. Of course, that hardware acceleration isn't currently possible on Macs, because Adobe doesn't have access to the appropriate APIs. So Jobs can easily on a imaginary version of Flash that doesn't have hardware acceleration and come up with an imaginary battery life impact. Jobs's bigger fib might be his description of ditching Flash as "trivial." It's not. While HTML5 is good, it's not great—yet. And even when it becomes great, it'll take major sites years to make the switch—however long it takes for the majority of internet users to stop using outmoded browsers. And that won't be for a very long time. Certainly longer than the first few generations of the iPad. So. Would Flash make the iPad's battery life only 1.5 hours? Maybe, maybe not. But the bigger question is: will we ever get the chance to find out for ourselves?
The only reason he doesn't want Flash is because then iPad users won't have to pay out the ass for apps.
It looks like the battery life would drain as quick as a flash.
How to fix this problem: Don't buy the ipad.
I'd buy an iPad if it had flash. And wasn't half a grand.
Are they comparing still web pages to hd videos and games or something?
The cost of an ipad ranges from 400 to 800 dollars. At least give yourself some respect and AT LEAST buy one of those skinny mac books if you're looking for something handy and lightweight. Otherwise just buy a regular lappy or something. Jesus Christ I hate technology these days.
The only reason he doesn't want Flash is because then iPad users won't have to pay out the ass for apps.
Most iPod Touch\iPhone users don't either, the iPads gonna be jailbroken anyways and people will pirate apps, this is hardly an excuse for it.
The lack of Flash on iPods, iPads, iPhones, iCunts and whatever else is due to the garbage on the Apple Store.
I don't like Steve Jobs.
They'll believe whatever shit spews out of that mans mouth, regardless of however illogical it is. [editline]07:32PM[/editline] If only that one flash->javascript thing worked well.
They can act like douche's all they want, I'm not buying their fucking product.
I like how he keeps making up all this shit in an attempt to make people stop bashing the product. You can tell that he's actually a bit worried about this thing.
I like how he keeps making up all this shit in an attempt to make people stop bashing the product. You can tell that he's actually a bit worried about this thing.
He is worried because he knows that we know it is a gimmicky piece of shit.
What exactly is supposed to do as well as be a digital book?
What exactly is supposed to do as well as be a digital book?
You can play ipod games like nazi zombies and show it to your friends and be with the cool crowd.
Oh. So it's pretty much an iPhone without the phone?
Fucking wow. This machine is revolutionary.
Oh. So it's pretty much an iPhone without the phone?
And fat, and expensive, and lacks features, and doesn't do what Jobs said it would do (bridge the smartphone and laptop gap). Basically all it is, is a giant smartphone and because of the enhanced screen size you can do a few things easier on it, but nowhere near laptop efficiency and diversity.
I really like flash. Wish it was faster, but as far as for web content, it is very nice. Apple doesn't like it for way too many reasons.
Doesn't the iPod battery last for 1.5 hours anyway?
The iPad is already a failure. Let's all move on.
I would never buy one of these unless I had enough money to tile the entire floor of my home with them. It's all fun and games until your friends sneak in and install fart apps on every single one :ohdear:
Jesus Christ I hate technology these days.
Yeah, fuck those light-weighted advanced computers. Commodore 64 is where it's at.
The only reason he doesn't want Flash is because then iPad users won't have to pay out the ass for apps.
Oh man, a company doesn't want to lose out on money while they're already losing some because of cracked applications?! Blasphemy!
Doesn't the iPod battery last for 1.5 hours anyway?
No, it last 1.5000001 hours.
Oh man, a company doesn't want to lose out on money while they're already losing some because of cracked applications?! Blasphemy!
Well, seeing as your name is ifaux, it's clear you're an apple fan. The lack of flash support costs them money because a lot of people will not buy it due to that.
It hasn't stopped tons of people from buying iPod Touches and iPhones. What do you think makes this any different? Non-techy people won't care. The "i" in my name doesn't mean I'm in love with every one of their products.
- Sir, the latest prototype of the ipad is complete. Now if there only were som way we could make the battery last a bit longer... - Well isn´t there something we could remove? - *Looks through list of worthless apps* no, I don´t see anyth.... but wait! We do have support for this thing called flash that uses quite a lot of power... - Then take that away! - But, but, it´s widely used all over the inter... - Hey, what do you think sells better? 10 hours of battery life, or 1,5?
Imagine if car manufacturers starting putting V2s in all cars, with the explanation "If we put more power in them they won't go as far!"
