ive just recently got into Aphex Twin but like to purchase my music as a CD rather than download it, so can anyone point me in the right direction to a good album of theirs to start with please?
Selected Ambient Works 85-92. It's a very relaxing album. If you like his more crazy stuff then get the Richard D. James album.
I'd go for Richard D. James.
thanks :) actually there is this coming out http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1;-1&sku=105452 2 CD boxset thingy, might be a good way to go :)

I'd get SAW 85-92, Drukqs, Come to Daddy, Richard D james, then ...I care because you do. Also pick up chosen lords, but if you have a vinyl player, and the money to spare then analords 1-11 are very, very good.
Ambient, relaxing stuff: Selected Ambient Works, both 85-92 and II. II is kinda creepy, though. Crazier stuff: Classics, Richard D. James.
Drukqs
I LOVE Aphex Twin! He's my favorite artist. Fave albums: Selected Ambient Works 1 and 2 Chosen Lords Drukqs Classics And as somebody earlier said, 2 is a mixture of creepy, unnerving songs and beautiful, chilled out songs. But it's my most-loved album.
It's just one guy, by the way. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=583135 I made a megathread of his stuff awhile back. You might be interested. I prefer Select Ambient Works 85-92 to SAW2
the analord albums are my favourites
Come to Daddy Windowlicker Drukqs Donkey Rhubarb Melodies from mars Chosen Lords (under the artist name of AFX) And it's one guy, so you don't talk about Aphex Twin in the plural form... And I got some live sets (Coachella Music Festival, Pukkelpop and at some party) that also have awesome DnB things...
Download the Analords from somewhere if you don't have the money (or equipment) for the vinyl (User was banned for this post ("Hinting at warez." - Kazumi))
Drukqs, definitely.
hey guys thanks for all the feedback and stuff i decided to go for the box set of 'I Care Becuase You Do and Richard D.James' and also 'Drukqs' give these 2 a listen and then pick up the rest hopefully, again thanks alot :)

This is an insane album, one of my favourites. It is absolutely mind blowing whilst stoned or on E, if you're into that kind of thing.
Which one? They're both great anyway.
I'm talking about "Selected Ambient Works 85-92", there is a SAW 1 & 2, but the 85-92 compilation is my favourite.
Good luck finding their real albums. Especially the older ones.
Good luck finding their real albums. Especially the older ones.
This is not very difficult! I found a copy of SAW II in the new age bin at a nearby record store for two dollars. The same store had Come to Daddy and the Windowlicker VHS in stock but I already own both of those. [editline]07:16PM[/editline] The internet also has many places to purchase cheap Aphex CDs
Good luck finding their real albums. Especially the older ones.
His damnit, Aphex Twin is a single person, Richard D. James!
I'd say just go chronologically in his major releases, because Drukqs is as crazy as it gets, and Selected Ambient Works is about as mellow as it gets. A nice crescendo. The Analord series is great as well, though, so don't miss that either. Also, look up "The Tuss", his newest stuff.
def. Drukqs
def. Drukqs
But if someone starts with Drukqs they might expect all of his music to be as intense and beat-heavy as that album is, and may not enjoy the rest as much. Since Drukqs is pretty much some of his best work, I'd say saving it for one of the last is the best way to do it.
If anyone lives in the area, Amoeba Records in San Francisco has TONS of Aphex Twin. It also has lots of albums by Autechre, another related Experimental Electronic/IDM. [editline]11:59PM[/editline] It has so many that there is a separate listing just for Aphex eps and singles

I've also found: Drukqs (not hard), Richard D. James Album (not hard either), Windowlicker, Come to Daddy, ... I Care Because You Do, Classics, 26 Mixes for Cash, Girl/Boy EP, and I think something else.
I haven't seen girl/boy in stores at all, but that ep is tacked onto the end of the american rdj album so it's okay!
Also, look up "The Tuss", his newest stuff.
This. The Tuss = some next level shit.
I love windowlicker, richard d. james album, and chosen lords. i actually don't have any selected ambient works, i'll try to track those down.
