Bettina Sågbom, a popular television anchor, revealed on Twitter on Monday that she had received emails threatening the lives of her and her family. On Tuesday she announced she had received a fresh email stating her death "would be made to look like an accident". Following the threats against Sågbom, which are now being investigated, other members of Finland's Swedish-speaking community, including well-known journalists and the vice head of the Swedish People's Party, said they had received similar threats.
Source This is disgusting.
There's usually minor mutters of discontent regarding the position of the Swedish language in Finland, but this is ridiculous. It is at least heartening to know that even the True Finns party think the people making the threats are utter twats.
Yeah or it could be because of Hockey :v:
That depends on the timeline of the other threats made, if they were made generally at the same time or not. I wouldn't put it past some people to get so outraged about the ice hockey, but Finland doesn't win that often against Sweden, to the point that I figure most people are more on the apathetic side about it.
we need to get our senseless swede-hating under control, it's been going on for too long
we need to get our senseless swede-hating under control, it's been going on for too long
It's a absurd tread for the younger generations of finns, to hate the swedes. Why? I don't really know.

After Russian immigrant laborers flocked to my country in the 50s/60s and tipped the demographic balance greatly, along with general russification, Russian was being pushed hard as the universal language of the USSR. Today, the immigrants' children and grandchildren still live here, and there's really no problem with that (for the most part). The problem lies in the language barrier. Most (non-chav) Russians I've known were nice, and had already become fluent in Estonian due to a bilingual home environment. Estonians have known Russian for every generation since WW2 (excluding most of the latest generation, born in the newly re-established Republic) - we just have to when about 16 to 20 percent of the population are Russians. And for the most part, it all works out between the nice people. But then there are the idiot Russians who claim we're rightfully a subservient nation of their sleeping empire and demand we make Russian a secondary national language. These Russians deliberately or out of indifference refrain from learning Estonian and then admit their children to purely Russian schools, propagating the problem, thus failing to function adequately in our society, preferring to remain unilingual, expecting us to reach out to them instead. In short, it's complicated. No death threats to my knowledge though (plenty of threats of vengeful re-occupation once the Bear awakens). 2nd world problems.
Getting rid of the completely pointless and forced teaching of Swedish would probably help...
No it wouldn't that is just a stupid excuse to have a reason to hate swedes, when there actually is no reason.
Getting rid of the completely pointless and forced teaching of Swedish would probably help...
maybe, maybe not
It's a absurd tread for the younger generations of finns, to hate the swedes. Why? I don't really know.
it's ~edgy and therefore cool or it could be the standard finnish jealousy mixed with nationalism kicking in
Getting rid of the completely pointless and forced teaching of Swedish would probably help...
English is forced, do these finns hate English People too? I think Swedish is forced only in areas near the Swedish border, if you don't like a forced language then don't speak it, its that simple.
English is forced, do these finns hate English People too? I think Swedish is forced only in areas near the Swedish border, if you don't like a forced language then don't speak it, its that simple.
Pretty sure it's not only forced near the border, but in most areas, if not all, of Finland.
I started reading Swedish and English in school when I was like 9 years old. I have spent probably more than 1000 hours studying Swedish but using it in real life? Less than 1 hour. I have never had real conversation in Swedish, I have met lot of Swedish people but we always spoke English instead because its just easier. If I had a choice I would have learned Spanish instead of Swedish. Being forced to learn a language you don't want to learn really sucks and that is main reason why I hate it. I don't hate Swedish people, I hate the language. EDIT: And now again when I'm applying to school it fucking pisses me off knowing that I still have to study that language when I'm 100% sure I will never ever use it in my life. Hell I don't even want to go to new school because I won't pass only because of that fucking language..
English is forced, do these finns hate English People too? I think Swedish is forced only in areas near the Swedish border, if you don't like a forced language then don't speak it, its that simple.
nope it's forced everywhere it would be perfectly reasonable for it to be mandatory out on the coast and maybe in the capital area, but seriously, what are the chances of running into a swedish-speaker deep in the mainland, like for example här i Tammerfors? we don't even have swedish roadsigns here btw you can't compare English to Swedish in this discussion. we don't hate English because it's a useful language in most parts of the 'western' world and many other places around the globe, while you're not really going to use Swedish for jack shit in India
I started reading Swedish and English in school when I was like 9 years old. I meet a lot of finns at my job and they know 0 Swedish so they start talking finnish to me and I only understand vittu perkele.
We, Finns hate Swedes because we hate Swedes
Ok. Nobody up north likes swedes and they don't like us. But this is insanely inappropriate. [editline]30th May 2013[/editline]
We, Finns hate Swedes because we hate Swedes
Or because they always side with the Russians against the rest of us throughout history.
We, Finns hate Swedes because we hate Swedes
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Volunteer_Corps_%28Winter_War%29 You still hate us?
Not really, if you would go around asking my friends "Do yoy hate Swedes and why" They would say "Cause theyre Swedes"
Sure. Because it's part of our heritage and it's part of our heritage because... Say it with me: They always fucked us over. They still do. It's still "us and them" up here. i thought that scandanavia was a land of plenty and pretty much a utopia thats what ive been told so stop bickering
we need to get our senseless swede-hating under control, it's been going on for too long
the general attitude of swedish people ain't helping. With all that fuzz of "only selling these lands to swedish people" in Helsinki and people speaking finnish at work in Sweden getting fired. Like there isn't literally hundreds of thousands of finnish people living in Sweden (which swedish government refuses to recognize as minority like we do with their population in Finland)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Volunteer_Corps_(Winter_War) You still hate us? Just out of curiosity what kind of stereotypes do you guys in Sweden and Denmark have against Norwegians?
as a fenno-swede minority, I feel that things like this is pointless.
Just out of curiosity what kind of stereotypes do you guys in Sweden and Denmark have against Norwegians?
Hmm, Your spoiled, Lazy and have funny words wehn translted to Swedish like Bra = Tuttekasse when i read that i read it as " Boob bag ", Crocodile = Pansartax, i read it as " Armored Fox " Oh and the best, Oil = Arabmelk, now when i read that i understand it as " Arab Milk " :v: But your nice i guess, atleast when i was in Oslo in 2011, i felt welcomed.
