Have you got a knack for electronics and computers, a penchant for public speaking, and a strong desire to work for one of the most brilliant scientists of our time? If so, have we got some news for you.
Stephen Hawking is hiring. And best of all? You may actually have a decent shot at the job.
According to his website, the famed theoretical physicist is searching for a technical assistant, and this is good news for those of us who aren't, well, whizzes at theoretical physics. Why? Because even though the official title of the job posting is "Graduate Assistant to Professor Hawking," this isn't a position for academics looking to study at the feet of the master of cosmology. It's actually a technical post. Your job will be to facilitate Hawking's ability to "function within the physics community and as a public speaker."
So what, specifically, will Dr. Hawking require of you? You can find the entire list here, but basically you'll be playing the dual role of manager/tech assistant — coordinating travel arrangements, drawing from your understanding of computers and electronics to maintain Hawkings' speech systems, dealing with press, fielding inquiries from the public, helping maintain the website, etc.
Think you've got what it takes? Head over to Hawkings' website to learn more. The official application process probably wont kick off until mid-January, but you can already fill out an "unofficial" application form. "Unofficial," in this context, means that you wont be offered a job based on the contents of this preliminary application alone, but your submission could be used to help cherry pick you from hoards of "irrelevant applications," should official channels become overwhelmed. Which they obviously will.
The salary is pretty crap, but it would be worth it just to work with the guy.

I feel like I have to spoonfeed Hawking.
That would be awesome to work with one of the greatest theoretical physicists of all time.

I think you just want to
Told a friend of mine about this, he's more than qualified. His response?
"Too much public interaction for my taste".

Some people don't like public speaking. I don't see what's wrong with that.
The salary is pretty crap, but it would be worth it just to work with the guy.
25000 quid is pretty much average wage in the UK as far as I know.
I may be wrong, though.

with the skills hawking requires you to have, its probably worth so much more
But imagine how good having worked for Hawkings would look on a résumé
Public speaking is feared more than death, it's actually the most common fear in the world.
Some people don't like public speaking. I don't see what's wrong with that.
His words were "public interaction", which knowing him means he doesn't like doing much that involves going outside to confront The Day Star.
It's like a real life "the king's speech" but with Hawkings and an IT nerd.
The salary is pretty crap, but it would be worth it just to work with the guy.
Where did you see a salary? I can't find any information on pay.
I feel like I have to spoonfeed Hawking.
this was one of my extended family's jobs for a while, spoonfeeding stephen hawking
I feel like I have to spoonfeed Hawking.
Spoonfeed? How about bathe, help get dressed, switch out colostomy bags...
The guy can't do jack shit for himself.
But imagine how good having worked for Hawkings would look on a résumé
You could write that you worked with the president and still can get turned down.
I feel like I have to spoonfeed Hawking.
That would most likely be relegated to his nurses. Even then, if I met the requirements, I would carry him up Mount Everest if he needed me to.
For some reason, the very first thing I thought was
'What would happen if the guy they chose smoothered him with a pillow?'

I saw the article on reddit a few days ago.
Do I have to speak in a robot voice?
Do I have to speak in a robot voice?
NEGATIVE.
Do I have to speak in a robot voice?
I'm afraid he can't let you do that.
I wish I was 18 and anywhere near the requirements. Stephen Hawking is one of my personal idols, this would enable me to die a happy man.
For some reason, the very first thing I thought was
'What would happen if the guy they chose smoothered him with a pillow?'
Why do that?
Hold him hostage, force him to design amazing contraptions for you, enslave humanity, become supreme overlord of Earth (and eventually the solar system), ????, PROFIT.
I'd do it, but there is no way in hell I could maintain my current college curriculum while doing it.
He'd call me too retarded to work with him.
i would do it if he could say aeiou
I would honestly love that but it doesn't sound like I actually have the technical expertise they're looking for. Public speaking's a walk in the park for me though.
...Anyone with the technical expertise wanna go 50/50 on the job?
The salary is pretty crap, but it would be worth it just to work with the guy.
To be completely honest it would be very awkward the first few days but great in the end.
