• Replacing Xbox 360 DVD drive laser

A 360 has recently stopped reading discs and doesn't display any errors indicating that discs can't be read for whatever reason. So, although drive swapping isn't an option (nor warranty - have had the system for much long than its warranty length), I was wondering if swapping the laser from the drive of another manufacturer (the drive at present is a BENQ, but I've got two Hitachi drives spare (January and June 2006)) would solve the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Either wouldent do shit or just blow it up, your probably not gonna find a diode that has the same specs as the broken one
If you cant fix it, at least you got a nifty case you could use, to fit a micro atx computer.
You could swap drives but it's probably a bit too much effort. You're not going to be able to use Hitachi lasers in a BenQ though, your best bet is to hit up eBay and get a new laser (You could also try googling "360 pot tweak" if you've got a multimeter and want to try stringing out the current laser a little longer).
Why not replace the entire drive? Probably would be a lot easier then crossing your fingers and hoping the diode will work.
XBOX360 drives are serial coded with each system invidially and you can't change the drive without modding your XBOX360 because the system won't read any disk if it's not the original drive installed in the system.

Thanks for the advice guys -- had tried both lasers from the other drives but neither of them startup.
You can only swap between BenQ and Liteon drives, nothing else.
Extract the key from the drive (can be a pain in the a** I did it before but only to flash mine) then buy a new drive and flash the key to it. That should work correct me if I'm wrong. I would've figured that getting another drive of the exact same model would pass just fine. I'm a little surprised by this considering that HDD's aren't affect by this limitation.
