About Adam
Hello my name is Adam Oomer and I am 4 years old. I was diagnosed with Diplegic Cerebral Palsy when I was 17 months old. This means that part of my brain which controls the muscles, receives wrong signals, causing me to have tightness of the muscles in my legs. This tightness causes me to walk high up on my toes, which causes me discomfort and I have difficulty with my balance and co-ordination, which means I frequently fall over. My legs and feet are rotated inwards which makes walking all the more so difficult for me. I am only able to walk a very short distance before complaining I am tired and need the use of my wheelchair, which means I can not play with my friends or brothers as much as I would like too. The more I grow and get older, simple tasks get harder.
I have a fantastic opportunity for a life changing operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in America, which involves cutting part of the “BAD” nerves in the spine to reduce messages to the brain which tell it to stiffen the muscles in my legs causing the spasticity, allowing them to be used more easily.
After the operation it will significantly improve my walking, posture and gain flat feet for the first time. It will reduce my spasticity and I will no longer need my wheelchair or frame giving me a more independent future. After this operation, I will need 18 months of physiotherapy to regain the use of my legs.
With everyone’s help we can make this life changing surgery possible for me.
Please help give me the best gift ever, so that I can walk with my feet flat on the ground. I hope you enjoy following me on my journey.
